The verdict

Choose Frankfurt if you want the outdoors within reach: protected countryside around the city, more attractions and park space near the centre, and a warmer summer, up to 26°C at the peak.

Choose Ghent if you want a smaller, compact trip with a wider range of kitchens, cooler summers near 22°C, and the coast close enough for 8 beaches within reach.

Where they differ

Frankfurt is the better base for getting out of the city: 28% of the land around it is protected against 7% around Ghent, and there is somewhat more park space near the centre. It also suits families better, with about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach against Ghent's 1.

Ghent is the one with coast access, 8 beaches nearby against Frankfurt's 4, though neither has sea warm enough for reliable swimming.

Where they are alike

Eating out is where they are level. Frankfurt has about twice as many restaurants near the centre, while Ghent spreads across a much wider range of kitchens, so both give you plenty of choice, in different forms.

Costs land in the same place too, with national estimates of €163 and €180 a day. The weather is close as well: both are mild rather than hot, and both have exactly one month with 40mm of rain or less.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children, Frankfurt is the easier pick: roughly twice as many attractions near the centre, more park space, 2 theme parks within reach against Ghent's 1, and protected countryside for days out.

A traveller who wants to eat well and walk should look at Ghent. The kitchens run to a wider range than Frankfurt's, its museums sit tightly around the centre, and 5 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach against Frankfurt's 4.

For museums and late nights, Frankfurt: about three times as many museums as Ghent, twice as many bars and clubs, and more notable places within walking distance of the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €180, are national estimates for the two countries, not measurements of Frankfurt or Ghent. A large or heavily visited city can sit well away from its country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so neither tells you which trip will cost more.

Ghent's beach count is about access, not swimming: the sea peaks at 19°C and neither city has a month of sea at 21°C or more. Frankfurt's protected land lies around the city rather than in it, so its nature advantage counts only if you plan days out.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Frankfurt: 1991-2020 normals, Frankfurt Westend (2 km from centre). Ghent: 1991-2020 normals, Vlissingen (44.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Frankfurt's summer is warmer and no wetter: peak highs of 24-26°C against Ghent's 22°C, and 60-68mm of rain against 74-79mm at the same time of year. Its own driest month brings 17°C and 38mm, which makes spring a workable second choice.

Ghent is best in late spring. April is its driest month at 35mm, and May brings 17°C. The sea only reaches 19°C at the end of summer, and from autumn the rain stays above 70mm a month, which is when Frankfurt pulls ahead.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
