The verdict

Choose Frankfurt if you want green space near the centre, easy reach into protected countryside, and a night out that stays close by rather than spreading across a large city.

Choose Paris if you want density: many times more notable places within walking distance of the centre, far more restaurants and bars, about twice as many museums, and more attractions and theme parks for children.

Where they differ

Frankfurt is the greener of the two, with about twice as much park space near the centre and 28% of the surrounding land protected. Its bars and clubs are fewer but sit mostly near the centre, so evenings need little travel.

Paris is the denser city by a long way: many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, many times as many restaurants and places to drink, and about three times as many nightclubs, though only about half of those sit near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Frankfurt has 4 beaches nearby and Paris 2, but no month brings sea at 21°C or more, so water is incidental to either trip.

The other close ground is heritage, weather and cost: UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach of both, summers that peak at the same height, and national price levels behind them that barely differ, €163 against €160.

Which traveller are you?

Museum and city walker: Paris. About twice as many museums as Frankfurt, and many times as many notable places within walking distance, mean days that need little transport, with UNESCO-listed sites reachable from either on a day trip.

Families: Paris again for volume, roughly twice as many attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach against Frankfurt's 2, though Frankfurt's greater central park space counts on days when small children need it.

Walkers and day-trippers: Frankfurt. The same 28% of protected land surrounds both, but Frankfurt pairs it with more park space near the centre and an evening contained in a smaller area.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 for Germany and €160 for France, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two national figures, so the near-identical numbers settle nothing about what a trip to either costs.

No weather station near Paris records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and its monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone. Treat that side of the weather comparison as unmeasured.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Frankfurt: 1991-2020 normals, Frankfurt Westend (2 km from centre). Paris: 1991-2020 normals, Paris-Montsouris (4.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Frankfurt's window is June to August, with highs of 24-26°C. July is its wettest month at 68mm, so the warmest stretch is not the driest, and autumn cools off quickly.

Paris runs a longer season. Summer highs match, and September still holds 22°C. Winter days sit near 8°C against Frankfurt's 5°C. Its wettest month comes earlier, 75mm in May, so late spring is the damper choice there and early autumn the safer one.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
