Where they differ

Geneva has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider spread of kitchens, roughly twice as many museums, and many times as many bars and clubs. For days out, 27% of the land around it is protected against 7% around Lucerne, and it has twice as many attractions near the centre plus 2 theme parks within reach against 1.

Lucerne leads on none of the measured axes. It is the smaller place, and its eating, nightlife and walkable sights are all a fraction of Geneva's.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both have beaches within reach, more of them near Geneva, but neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so a dip is a warm-day extra rather than a reason to go.

Their weather years otherwise run in parallel: coldest-month highs of 4-5°C, summer peaks of 24-27°C, and rain in every month, with neither city dropping to 40mm or less even at its driest.

If you want a small base and short days on foot, Lucerne is the more contained city, though its walkable sights number roughly a third of Geneva's and just 7% of the surrounding land is protected, against 27% around Geneva.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figures tell you nothing here. Both cities carry the same national price level, and the daily budget of €248 beside them is one country-wide estimate rather than a measurement of either place, so it cannot be used to call one the cheaper trip.

Beach counts are the other trap. Both have beaches within reach, more of them around Geneva, but neither records a month of sea at 21°C or more, so these are cool-water swims at best. And rain never really stops: neither city has a month at 40mm or less, and in Lucerne the warmest months are also the wettest.

Geneva's window runs May to September, with highs climbing from 20°C to 27°C and summer rain staying in the 77-87mm band, so warm days are more reliably usable. Midwinter is the flat point, at 5-6°C, and rain does not let up.

Lucerne is at its warmest in July and August, at 24°C, but those are also its wettest months, near 119-126mm, and rain shapes the plan more than heat does. September, at 19°C and 87mm, is the steadier pick, and the shoulder months are cooler than Geneva's throughout.
