The verdict

Choose Genoa if you want a city as well as a coast: many more museums, restaurants and bars near the centre, more notable places within walking distance, and 8% of the land around it protected for day trips.

Choose Rovinj if the plan is swimming and quiet evenings: 55 beaches nearby, a shorter list of places to drink, and 3 theme parks within reach where Genoa has none.

Where they differ

Genoa has many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, so days can be built on foot, plus many times as many museums, restaurants and places to drink, and about three times as many nightclubs. Day trips work better too: 8% of the surrounding land is protected against 2% around Rovinj.

Rovinj answers with the coast: 55 beaches nearby against Genoa's 37, and 3 theme parks within reach where Genoa has none.

Where they are alike

Swimming is the common ground: the sea meets the centre in Genoa and sits 1km from it in Rovinj, both have four months of sea at 21°C or more, and both have dozens of beaches within reach.

Weather and cost run close behind. Both are at their warmest in high summer and at their coolest in January, and the national price estimates behind them, Italy's and Croatia's, are not far apart.

Which traveller are you?

For a museum-and-restaurant trip, Genoa: many times as many museums as Rovinj, many times as many restaurants near the centre, and enough notable places within walking distance to fill several days on foot.

Families are better served in Genoa too, with about three times as many tourist attractions and about three times as much park space near the centre. Rovinj's counter is 3 theme parks within reach, where Genoa has none.

Swimmers who want early nights should take Rovinj: 55 beaches nearby, the sea 1km from the centre, and far fewer bars and clubs than Genoa, so evenings stay quiet.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures are national estimates for Italy and Croatia, price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of either city. The gap between them is not evidence that one place costs more on the ground, and a coastal town of 13,000 in high season need not track its country's average.

Equal standing on swimming hides different pressure: Rovinj's 55 beaches serve a town of that size, and the warm-sea months are the same in both, so a quieter visit means the wet end of the year, when November brings more than 120mm to each and Rovinj has few places to drink indoors.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Genoa: 1991-2020 normals, Genova / Sestri (6.7 km from centre). Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Genoa suits May to September, and its high summer is the drier of the two: 12mm in its driest month against 61mm in Rovinj, with highs near 27°C. The autumn shoulder is drier too, 72mm against 114mm in September.

Rovinj is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 29°C and the sea is a shade warmer than Genoa's. Rain is heavier right through its season, winter days stay colder than Genoa's, and it carries the wetter autumn of the two.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
