The verdict

Choose Genoa if you want the coast: dozens of beaches within reach, a sea warm enough to swim from June to September, and the denser walkable centre with more bars and clubs.

Choose Verona if you are travelling with children: far more attractions and park space near the centre, four theme parks within reach, and warmer days across the year, though no swimming.

Where they differ

Genoa is the coastal choice. It has beaches in quantity and four months of sea at 21°C or more, where Verona has next to nothing to swim in. Its centre is the denser one to walk, with more notable buildings close together and a considerably wider choice of bars and clubs.

Verona suits a trip with children better, with far more attractions near the centre and much more park space. Days run warmer across the year too, up to 30°C in summer, though winter highs fall near 7°C.

Where they are alike

The countryside around each is protected to a similar degree, 8% of the land around Genoa and 9% around Verona, and in neither case are day trips the main reason to come.

Both carry heritage, in different shapes: Genoa has about twice as many museums, while Verona has 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Genoa's 1. Eating out is comparable as well, with a similar range of kitchens in each.

Which traveller are you?

Families with young children should take Verona. It has roughly three times as many tourist attractions near the centre, twice as much park space, and 4 theme parks within reach where Genoa has none.

Anyone whose holiday centres on swimming wants Genoa: 37 beaches nearby and sea reaching 25°C in August, against a Verona that offers essentially no swimming at all.

For a city break built on evenings and walking, Genoa again, with about twice as many bars and clubs and a denser core. Verona answers with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information: it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it says nothing about which city costs more. The €155 daily budget is that same national estimate rather than a measurement of either place.

Genoa's coastal strength is a summer strength. The sea is only swimmable for part of the year, and the wettest months, above 100mm, follow straight after it. Verona's warmest days arrive when its own monthly rating is falling: heat, more rain than spring, and just 2 beaches to reach.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Genoa peaks in high summer, with highs of 27-28°C in July and August, the driest weeks of the year at 12-20mm, and the sea at its warmest. Autumn turns heavy, with 122mm in November.

Verona is better in late spring, when May and June reach 24-28°C ahead of the 30°C peak of high summer. Rain is more evenly spread across the year here, and early autumn is its wettest warm spell. Winter is cold, with highs near 7°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
