Where they differ
Hamburg is the stronger night city by a wide margin, with many times as many bars and clubs as Heidelberg, most of them near the centre. It also has many times as many restaurants close to the centre, and a wider spread of kitchens.
Heidelberg reverses that beyond the built-up area: 52% of the land around it is protected against 14% around Hamburg, and four UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach. Hamburg has more park space near its own centre, but less open country past it.
Where they are alike
Museums and heritage land in much the same place. Hamburg has about twice as many museums, while Heidelberg has four UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Hamburg's one, so both support a few days of history, approached differently.
Neither is a swimming destination: no month brings sea of 21°C or more at either. Their weather runs close too, winter highs of 4-5°C, summers of 23-26°C, and rain in every month of the year.
Which traveller are you?
Someone planning a food and nightlife weekend should take Hamburg: many times as many bars and clubs as Heidelberg, and a far wider spread of restaurants near the centre, most of it walkable from one base.
A walker or day-tripper is better served by Heidelberg. Protected land covers 52% of its surroundings against 14% around Hamburg, and four UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach, so open country starts close to town.
Families lean towards Hamburg, with more tourist attractions and much more park space near the centre, and about three times as many notable places within walking distance. Each city has 1 theme park within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value figure is a national price level applied to both cities, so it is identical by construction. It tells you nothing about whether one trip costs more than the other, and the €163 daily budget beside it is a single national estimate rather than a measurement of Hamburg or Heidelberg. Compare real accommodation prices for your dates instead.
Beach counts mislead here: 16 near Hamburg and 6 near Heidelberg, yet neither has a month with sea at 21°C or above. Those counts describe places by water, not a swimming season.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Hamburg: 1991-2020 normals, Hamburg Airport (9.3 km from centre). Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre).
Hamburg peaks in July and August at 23°C, but those are also its wettest, up to 82mm, so the warmest weeks and the heaviest rain arrive together. Its only dry month is April, 39mm, though highs are then just 14°C.
Heidelberg is warmer over a longer stretch, May to September, reaching 26°C at midsummer, which widens the shoulder season either side. No month drops below 45mm, so there is no dry window to aim for. January is cold in both, 4-5°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
