The verdict

Choose Heidelberg if you want variety within walking distance: museums, a wide range of places to eat, and green country around it, with 52% of the nearby land protected.

Choose Interlaken if the trip is about the setting rather than the town: a place of about 6,100 people, quiet in the evenings, with more lake beaches nearby and drier spring months.

Where they differ

Heidelberg is the stronger base for days out: 52% of the land around it is protected against 19% around Interlaken, and there is far more park space near the centre. It has many times as many museums, more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and about three times as many attractions near the centre, plus a theme park Interlaken cannot match.

Interlaken leads on water and dry weather: 12 beaches nearby against Heidelberg's 6, and 3 months at 40mm of rain or less where Heidelberg has none.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both have lake beaches rather than coast, and neither records a month of water at 21°C or more, so a swim is a warm-day extra rather than a reason to go.

Year-round conditions are close: highs of 5-26°C in Heidelberg against 3-24°C in Interlaken, cold winters and mild summers in both. Both also keep their notable places near the centre, so sightseeing in either is done on foot.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling for museums and evenings out should take Heidelberg: many times as many museums, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2, about twice as many restaurants near the centre, and far more bars and clubs.

Families are better served in Heidelberg, with far more attractions near the centre, much more park space, and a theme park within reach, none of which Interlaken matches.

A traveller wanting a quiet, small-town base should take Interlaken: about 6,100 residents, very little in the way of nightlife or restaurant choice, but 12 lake beaches nearby and drier spring and early-autumn weather than Heidelberg.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 for Germany and €248 for Switzerland, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either town. A heavily visited place can sit further from its own national average than the two countries sit from each other.

No weather station near Interlaken records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low, and the weather comparison is unmeasured on that side. Its beach count misleads too: those are lake shores, and neither place has a month warm enough for easy swimming.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre). Interlaken: 2005-2020 (rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Meiringen / Unterbach (19.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Heidelberg's window is wide: May to September, with highs from 21°C in May to 26°C in July and August. Rain falls all year and July is the wettest at 80mm, so summer showers are part of the deal; April is already usable.

Interlaken peaks later and tighter, in July and August at 24°C and 23°C, and those are also its wettest months, near 62mm. September is the better compromise at 18°C with 38mm, and spring is drier still, down to 34mm in April.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
