The verdict
Choose Heidelberg if you want the countryside within reach, quieter evenings and a drier summer: protected land surrounds it and the walking season runs from May well into September.
Choose Munich if you want the city itself to do the work: far more restaurants and bars, attractions clustered for children, and most notable sights within walking distance of the centre.

Where they differ
Heidelberg's advantage is what lies outside it: 52% of the surrounding land is protected against 17% around Munich, and it has 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach to Munich's 1. Days out, rather than street life, are the point.
Munich has many times as many bars, clubs and restaurants near the centre, and a somewhat wider range of kitchens. Notable places cluster within walking distance, three times as many attractions sit near the centre, and 2 theme parks lie within reach against Heidelberg's 1.
Where they are alike
Neither is a swimming destination. Both have 6 beaches within reach, but neither sees a month of sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is incidental.
On museums and climate they are close. Munich holds somewhat more museums, packed tightly around the centre, while Heidelberg's heritage extends outward to day-trip sites. Both run cool winters and warm summers, 5-26°C against 4-25°C, and neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less.
Which traveller are you?
Travelling with children: Munich. Three times as many attractions sit near the centre, park space is far greater, and 2 theme parks are within reach against Heidelberg's 1, so short days out need less planning.
Walkers and day-trippers: Heidelberg. Just over half the surrounding land is protected, against 17% around Munich, and 4 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip range, so a train ticket opens up more than it does from Munich.
Eating and going out: Munich. Many times as many restaurants, bars and clubs, and a wider spread of kitchens; in Heidelberg the smaller night-time offering is at least concentrated near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
Value for money here is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so the comparison between these two cities carries no information. The daily budget of €163 beside it is a single national estimate rather than a measurement of Heidelberg or Munich, and says nothing about what either city actually costs.
Munich's warmest months are also its wettest, with 107-121mm falling from May to August, so its best months are not its driest. Heidelberg's outdoor strength sits outside the city: over half the surrounding land is protected, but reaching it needs transport, while Munich's park space is near the centre.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).
Heidelberg is the better warm-weather pick. June to August brings highs of 24-26°C on 66-80mm of rain, and September still holds 21°C with 56mm, so the walking season runs long.
Munich peaks at 25°C in July and August, but its wettest stretch, May to August, delivers 107-121mm a month, close to double Heidelberg's summer rain. October, drier at 67mm, suits an indoor-led visit.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
