The verdict

Choose Innsbruck if the point of the trip is what lies outside the city. 31% of the surrounding land is protected, day trips start close by, and the museums and bars you do want sit within a short walk of each other.

Choose Vienna if you want museums, a wide range of places to eat and late nights, plus more to do with children, and you accept nightlife spread well beyond the centre.

Where they differ

Innsbruck is the one for time spent outdoors: 31% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Vienna, so walking country starts close by. Its museums and drinking places also sit tightly around the centre.

Vienna has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a far wider range of kitchens, many times as many museums, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Innsbruck's 1. It also has many times as many bars and clubs, though only about half are near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Vienna has 22 bathing spots nearby against Innsbruck's 10, but neither has water at 21°C or more in any month, so a swim is an occasional warm-day extra rather than a reason to go.

The weather year is close as well. Both bottom out at 3-4°C in January and reach 26-27°C in July, with similar annual sunshine. Rain falls in every month in both, so neither offers a reliably dry season.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone who wants hills and open country between city days should take Innsbruck. 31% of the land around it is protected, against 4% around Vienna, and it is all reachable from a compact centre.

A traveller after museums, galleries and long dinners belongs in Vienna: many times the number of museums and restaurants, a much wider range of kitchens, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Families are better served in Vienna too, with about three times as many attractions near the centre, roughly twice the park space and 4 theme parks within reach against Innsbruck's 2.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two cities carries no information. Both are given the same national price level by construction, and the €160 a day beside them is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Decide on other grounds.

Beach counts mislead here as well. Vienna has 22 bathing spots nearby and Innsbruck 10, yet neither has a month with water at 21°C or more, so those are lake and river swims in a short warm season, not the basis for a swimming holiday.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Innsbruck: 1991-2020 normals, Innsbruck-Flughafen (3.3 km from centre). Vienna: 1991-2020 normals, Wien / Hohe Warte (4.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Innsbruck's warmest months, at 24-26°C, are also its wettest, with 119-144mm falling in July and August. Early autumn suits it better: September still reaches 21°C and October is drier at 70mm, and it is through the cooler half of the year that Innsbruck holds up marginally better.

Vienna is the stronger pick from April onwards: 17°C by April, 27°C in midsummer, and 71-78mm at the height of summer, less rain than Innsbruck at the same time.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
