The verdict

Choose Interlaken if the point of the trip is mountains and walking. About 19% of the land nearby is protected, and the centre has many times more notable places within walking distance, so short days out need little planning.

Choose Rovinj if swimming matters. It has 55 beaches nearby against Interlaken's 12, a sea warm enough for late-summer swimming, and milder winters.

Where they differ

Interlaken is the walking trip. About 19% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Rovinj, and far more notable places sit within walking distance of the centre, where Rovinj's are scattered. It also has twice as many tourist attractions near the centre.

Rovinj is the swimming trip, with 55 beaches nearby against Interlaken's 12 and four months of sea at 21°C or more, which Interlaken has none of. The national price estimates behind them differ, €138 a day for Rovinj's country against €248 for Interlaken's.

Where they are alike

Eating out is where the two are closest. Neither is a restaurant destination: they have a similar number of places to eat near the centre, though Interlaken covers a wider range of kitchens.

Museums, nightlife and family attractions are modest in both. Each has a similar number of museums, Rovinj's sitting tighter around the centre; Interlaken has 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1. Drinking places and clubs are few in both and sit near the centre.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone whose days are built around hiking and mountain excursions should take Interlaken: 19% of the land around it is protected, and enough notable places sit within walking distance of the centre to fill wet afternoons.

Families who want a beach holiday are better served by Rovinj: 55 beaches nearby, sea at 26°C in August, more park space near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach, where Interlaken has none.

Neither suits a traveller after museums and late nights. Rovinj has about twice as many bars and clubs, all close to the centre; Interlaken counters with more UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €248 and €138, are single national estimates of restaurant and hotel prices, not measurements of Interlaken or Rovinj. A small resort town can sit a long way from its own country's average, in either direction, so the gap between the two national figures is not evidence about what either place will cost you.

No weather station near Interlaken records sunshine hours, so that figure is missing rather than low and one side of the weather comparison is unmeasured. Rovinj's mildest autumn air comes with its heaviest rain, above 110mm a month, while its best swimming months are also the ones when its beaches are busiest.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
