The verdict

Choose Izmir if you want to swim: it has the beaches, a sea warm enough for about five months of the year, and far more bars and clubs for the evening.

Choose Plovdiv if your days are spent on foot in parks and green space near the centre, with more protected land around the city and summers that top out near 31°C rather than 34°C.

Where they differ

Izmir is the coastal option: 4 beaches nearby against Plovdiv's 1, and sea at 21°C or more for five months of the year, which Plovdiv has in no month at all. Evenings run wider too, with roughly three times the bars and nightclubs, most of them near the centre.

Plovdiv is the greener base, with about twice as much park space near the centre and a slightly larger share of protected land around it, 5% against 4%, for days spent out of town.

Where they are alike

Both keep their notable places within walking distance of the centre, and in similar numbers, so seeing the core on foot takes no planning in either.

The other close calls are eating, museums and family appeal. Izmir has more restaurants and more museums near the centre, while Plovdiv offers a wider range of kitchens and a tighter cluster of museums. Neither has a UNESCO-listed site within day-trip reach, and neither city is built around children.

Which traveller are you?

Swimmers and night owls: Izmir. Four beaches within reach, sea at 21°C or more from June to October, and roughly three times the drinking and clubbing venues, most of them walkable from the centre.

Walkers who want green space: Plovdiv. About twice the park space near the centre, a slightly larger share of protected land around the city for day trips, and cooler summer days than Izmir.

Families: Izmir has the narrow edge, with more attractions near the centre and 2 theme parks where Plovdiv has none. Plovdiv counters with parkland, though neither city is strongly geared to children.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €100 and €77, are national estimates for the two countries, not measurements of Izmir or Plovdiv. A large or heavily visited city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so they cannot tell you which trip costs more.

Izmir's swimming case rests on midsummer: the sea is warmest, 24°C in August, in the months when daytime highs reach 34°C and rain nearly stops. Counts of restaurants and museums near the centre also say nothing about quality or opening hours.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Izmir: 1991-2020 normals, Izmir (3.4 km from centre). Plovdiv: 1997-2020 (sunshine 1991-2020, rainfall 1991-2020) normals, Plovdiv (1.2 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Izmir's best window is May and September, with highs of 27-29°C, rain under 35mm and a sea warm enough to swim from June to October. July and August are close to rainless but reach 34°C.

Plovdiv suits June to September, at 26-31°C, with August the driest month at 25mm. Rain is spread through the year there, so a warm month is not a dry one. Winter is the sharp divide: 5°C at coldest in Plovdiv, and Izmir's wettest stretch.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
