The verdict

Choose La Spezia if the point of the trip is water and open country: a sea that stays swimmable later in the year, 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and evenings that stay quiet.

Choose Marseille if you want a city you can work through on foot, with a far wider choice of places to eat, more museums, more bars and clubs, and more to occupy children.

Where they differ

La Spezia is the better base for days out, with 2 UNESCO-listed places within reach against Marseille's 1. Its sea is warmer for longer, at 21°C or more for 4 months against 2, stretching the swimming season.

Marseille is the stronger city on the ground, with far more notable places within walking distance, many times as many restaurants and a much wider range of kitchens, far more bars and clubs, and more for children, including 4 theme parks within reach against 2.

Where they are alike

The weather is the closest thing between them. Both run daytime highs of about 11-30°C across the year, so the shape of the seasons is the same: mild winters, hot summers, and no month that rules either out.

They are alike at the coast: the sea is 0km from both centres, so swimming is a walk rather than an excursion. Both have a moderate museum offering, and their countries carry similar national price levels, €155 and €160 a day.

Which traveller are you?

Beach-first travellers: La Spezia, whose sea stays at 21°C or more for a longer stretch of the year, so late-season swimming is more dependable; Marseille offers more choice, 64 beaches against 32, but cooler water.

Anyone travelling for food and evenings out: Marseille, with many times as many restaurants near the centre, a far wider range of kitchens, and considerably more bars and clubs, most of them close to the centre.

Families and short-stay walkers: Marseille, with far more attractions and notable places within walking distance of the centre and 4 theme parks within reach against 2; park space near the centre is similar in both.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 and €160, are national estimates for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. Each city can sit far from its own national average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so this says nothing about which trip costs more.

La Spezia's longer warm-sea season reads well until you line it up against the rain: September still swims, but it opens the wet half of the year, with as much as 132mm in the months that follow. Beach counts say nothing about how crowded those beaches are when both cities are at their best.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. La Spezia: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (64.8 km from centre). Marseille: 1991-2020 normals, Marseille / Marignane (20.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

La Spezia works best from June to August, with highs of 27-30°C, a sea at 22-25°C and rain down to 32-41mm. The water still holds 23°C in September, though the autumn rain sets in from then and stays heavy.

Marseille peaks in May and June at 24-28°C, with less rain than La Spezia in most months, and July is its driest at 11mm. Its water is cooler, so early season swimming is less reliable, but the shoulder months are drier.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
