The verdict

Choose Lucerne if you want a small city, about 86,200 people, where the walking and the protected country around it matter more than what is on in the evening.

Choose Lyon if you want range: many times as many restaurants and bars near the centre, about twice as many museums, denser sights within walking distance, and warmer summers, with highs of 28°C in July and August.

Where they differ

Lucerne is the smaller and quieter, 86,200 people against 519,000, and slightly more of the land around it is protected, 7% against 6%. Evenings are limited: far fewer places to drink and clubs than Lyon.

Lyon has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, about twice as many museums, and 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Lucerne's 1. Nights out are on a different scale. The national price level is lower in France, €160 a day against €248 for Switzerland.

Where they are alike

Neither is a place to swim in the sea. Both have beaches within reach, 26 near Lyon and 16 near Lucerne, but neither gets a month of water at 21°C or more, so swimming is an occasional summer thing rather than a reason to go.

Countryside and weather are the other near-matches. Roughly the same share of the land around each is protected, and both warm to a July peak and fall back to cold winters. Neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less.

Which traveller are you?

For eating and going out, Lyon is the clear pick: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs, most of them central.

Families are better served in Lyon as well, with about twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space within easy reach, and 2 theme parks against Lucerne's 1.

Walkers who want a quiet base will prefer Lucerne: a city of 86,200 people with slightly more protected land around it, 7% against 6%, though Lyon has more green space close to its centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €248 for Switzerland and €160 for France, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit far from its country's average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so they do not tell you which trip costs more.

The beach counts mislead too: both have beaches within reach, but neither gets a month of sea at 21°C or more. And Lucerne's warmest months are also its wettest, 119-128mm, so the warmest weeks are not the driest; Lyon's wettest month comes in October, after its warm season.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

WorseBetter

Lucerne is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 24°C, though those are also among its wettest months at 119-128mm. September is a fair compromise, 19°C and 87mm. Winter is cold, with January highs of 4°C.

Lyon's window is longer, June to September, with 26-28°C in high summer and less rain than Lucerne then, 66-73mm in June and July. October turns wet at 101mm, and late winter stays milder, 9-14°C in February and March.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
