The verdict

Choose Marseille if the sea is the point: 64 beaches nearby, swimming warm enough in high summer, warmer and drier weather across more of the year, and a wider range of kitchens to eat through.

Choose Turin if you would rather spend the days in museums and the evenings out: a far deeper museum offering, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and many more places to drink.

Where they differ

Marseille is the one with a coast: dozens of beaches where Turin has effectively none, and water warm enough for swimming at the height of summer. It also runs warmer through the year, highs of 12-31°C against Turin's 7-29°C, and has six months with 40mm of rain or less where Turin has none.

Turin has about twice as many museums, and about three times as many places to drink, along with more nightclubs, though only about half of them sit near the centre.

Where they are alike

Both keep their main interest in a compact centre: Marseille has somewhat more notable places within walking distance, but in each you can cover the core on foot.

Neither is a strong base for wide-ranging day trips: 15% of the land around Marseille is protected against 6% around Turin, while Turin holds more park space near its centre. Their national daily budgets are close as well, €160 and €155.

Which traveller are you?

Beach-led family trip: Marseille. It has 64 beaches nearby, sea warm enough for swimming in high summer, and 4 theme parks within reach, where Turin has none and no real swimming to speak of.

Museum-led long weekend: Turin, with about twice as many museums as Marseille and four UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, in a centre compact enough to cross on foot.

Eating and going out: split. Turin has far more places to drink and more clubs, though only about half sit near the centre. Marseille matches it on restaurant numbers near the centre but offers a much wider range of kitchens.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €160 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Marseille or Turin. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own country average than these two national figures sit from each other, so the gap is not evidence that one trip costs more than the other.

Sunshine is recorded for Marseille at 2883 hours a year, but no weather station near Turin reports it. The figure is missing rather than low, so Turin's monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone and that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

No sunshine record

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Marseille: 1991-2020 normals, Marseille / Marignane (20.6 km from centre). Turin: 1991-2020 normals, Torino / Caselle (15.4 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Marseille suits May to July: highs of 24-31°C and very little rain, 11mm at the driest. The sea is at its warmest in August, 22°C, and cooler either side. Autumn turns wet, over 70mm a month, and winter is mild but flat.

Turin is best from June to September, highs of 24-29°C, though rain is heavier across the season, above 80mm in late summer, so plan indoor days. Winter is the weak point, with January highs of 7°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
