Where they differ
Milan has many times as many museums as Montpellier, tightly grouped around the centre, plus 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2. Many more notable sights sit within walking distance, and there are far more bars and clubs.
Montpellier has 8 beaches nearby against Milan's 4, with sea at 21°C or more in high summer. Daytime highs run 12-30°C across the year, warmer throughout, and several months stay at 40mm of rain or less, where Milan has none. Its kitchens cover a wider range.
Where they are alike
Eating out is solid in both. Milan has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, while Montpellier, far smaller, covers a much wider range of kitchens, so neither city leaves you short of an evening meal.
The national price estimates behind them are close, €155 for Italy and €160 for France. Summers align too: both peak in high summer, at 29°C in Milan and 30°C in Montpellier, so the climate difference is really a winter one.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone travelling for museums and old streets should take Milan: many times as many museums as Montpellier, more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2.
Families lean to Milan, which has many more attractions near the centre and about twice the park space, though Montpellier counters with 7 theme parks within reach against Milan's 5 and beaches close by.
Anyone planning around swimming and warm evenings should choose Montpellier, with 8 beaches nearby and sea at 21-22°C in late summer. Travellers who want late bars and clubs will find far more of both in Milan.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €155 and €160, are national price levels for Italy and France, not measurements of either city. They cannot see how far a large or heavily visited city sits from its country's average, and that gap can exceed the difference between the two countries, so these numbers say nothing about which trip costs more.
Montpellier's beach advantage is narrow in time: the sea only reaches 21-22°C in July and August, the same weeks the coast is fullest, and is cooler the rest of the year. Milan's rain works the other way, arriving in autumn, when a city seen on foot is least forgiving.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Milan: 1991-2020 normals, Novara / Cameri (41.2 km from centre). Montpellier: 1991-2020 normals, Montpellier (7.8 km from centre).
Milan is at its best from June to August, with highs of 26-29°C and the lightest rain of its warm season, 57mm in July. Autumn turns wet, above 110mm in September and October, which matters in a city you cover on foot.
Montpellier's warm window is longer at both ends. July and August pair 29-30°C with rain of 17-36mm and sea at 21-22°C, and winter highs sit near 12-13°C, so winter days still work outdoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
