The verdict

Choose Milan if the trip is about the city itself: museums, restaurants and evenings out within walking reach of one centre, with parks and attractions that also suit children.

Choose Sorrento if the point is the sea. It has 78 beaches nearby and water above 21°C through the summer, in a small town whose centre is quickly walked and whose evenings are quiet.

Where they differ

Milan is the stronger base for families and for walking. It has many times as many attractions and notable places near the centre, far more park space, and 5 theme parks within reach against Sorrento's 1. It also has many times as many restaurants and bars, and a much wider range of kitchens.

Sorrento is the one with the coast: 78 beaches nearby against Milan's 4, and sea above 21°C for five months of the year, peaking at 26°C. Its own centre holds few notable places by comparison.

Where they are alike

Weather is where the two sit closest. Both peak in high summer, Milan at 29°C and Sorrento at 31°C, both are at their coolest in the same winter month, and both take their heaviest rain in November.

Heritage is the other overlap. Both have UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, 5 from Sorrento and 4 from Milan, so either can support a day out, though Milan's own museums are more numerous and sit closer together.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Milan. It has many times as many attractions and much more park space near the centre, plus 5 theme parks within reach against Sorrento's 1, so indoor days have somewhere to go.

Swimming holiday: Sorrento. 78 beaches nearby, sea warm enough for five months and reaching 26°C at its peak, all within short reach of a small town.

City break on foot: Milan. Notable places, museums, restaurants and bars cluster tightly around the centre, so several days without a car still fill themselves; Sorrento's walkable centre is soon exhausted.

What the numbers don't tell you

Both cities sit at the same national price level, so the value comparison between them carries no information at all. The €155 a day beside each is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either place.

Sorrento's coastal strength and its dry weather land in the same short summer window, which is also when a town of 15,400 residents takes its visitors, and the beaches are counted nearby rather than all in town. Outside that window the rain climbs, to 159mm at its autumn peak, and the data shows little in the way of restaurants or nightlife to fall back on.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Milan: 1991-2020 normals, Novara / Cameri (41.2 km from centre). Sorrento: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (53.6 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Milan is at its best from June to August, when highs run 26-29°C and rain eases to 57-83mm. May and September are warm enough but wetter, and late autumn is the coldest and wettest part of the year.

Sorrento holds a longer season. Its summer is dry, at 17-29mm, with highs of 28-31°C and sea at 23-26°C. October still swims at 22°C, though the rain returns and late autumn is wetter still.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
