The verdict
Choose Montpellier if the sea matters: 8 beaches within reach, water warm enough to swim in late summer, and a warmer, drier year than Paris.
Choose Paris if the city itself is the trip: many times more museums and notable places within walking distance of the centre, a far wider choice of restaurants, and nightlife on another scale.

Where they differ
Montpellier is the one with a coast: 8 beaches nearby against Paris's 2, and sea reaching 22°C in August. It also runs warmer through the year, 12-30°C against 8-26°C, with more months at 40mm of rain or less.
Paris packs many times more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and many times more museums, tightly grouped, with 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2. Bars and clubs outnumber Montpellier's several times over, and restaurant choice is far wider.
Where they are alike
Day trips work from both. Protected countryside covers a meaningful share of the land around each, 15% around Montpellier and 28% around Paris, and both have green space near the centre, with Paris holding somewhat more.
They are also alike in the range of kitchens on offer, though Paris has many more places overall, and in having a long usable season rather than one short peak: summer highs of 30°C and 26°C respectively.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming is the point of the trip, Montpellier is the only real answer: 8 beaches within reach and sea reaching 22°C in August, where Paris has 2 beaches and water that never warms up.
Museum-first travellers should go to Paris: many times more museums, grouped tightly around the centre, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and enough notable buildings close together to fill several days on foot.
Families split. Paris has far more attractions near the centre and somewhat more park space for a city break on foot; Montpellier answers with 7 theme parks within reach against 3, plus beaches for the afternoons.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison here tells you nothing. Both cities carry the same national price level by construction, and the €160 a day shown beside each is one country-wide estimate rather than a measurement of Montpellier or Paris. Treat neither as the cheaper trip, and check real accommodation and transport prices for your dates.
The sunshine figure is missing for Paris, as no nearby station records it, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured. And Montpellier's warmest, driest months are its busiest: the sea only reaches 21°C or more in July and August.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Montpellier: 1991-2020 normals, Montpellier (7.8 km from centre). Paris: 1991-2020 normals, Paris-Montsouris (4.6 km from centre).
Montpellier peaks from June to August, with highs of 27-30°C, sea warm enough to swim at 21-22°C and rainfall dropping as low as 17mm at midsummer. Autumn is the catch: 88-93mm across September and October make late trips a gamble.
Paris is at its best from June to August, with highs of 24-26°C, but rain sits near 51-58mm right through the summer rather than easing off, and May, otherwise pleasant, is the wettest month of its year at 75mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
