The verdict

Choose Mostar if heritage is the point: about as many museums as Skopje, plus a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and warmer days year-round, topping out at 33°C.

Choose Skopje if you want range: roughly three times the restaurants and drinking places near the centre, far more park space, and drier weather through most of the year, where Mostar's autumn and winter turn heavy.

Where they differ

Mostar's edge is heritage and warmth. Museum counts are similar in both, but only Mostar has a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and it runs warmer across the year, 9-33°C against 5-32°C. It also has 7 beaches nearby where Skopje has none.

Skopje is the broader city: about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider range of kitchens, three times as many bars and clubs, twice as many notable places within walking distance, and much more park space, with 11% of the surrounding land protected against 6%.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Mostar has beaches nearby and Skopje has none, but neither city gets a single month with sea at 21°C or more, so neither trip can be built around getting into the water.

Their years also track each other closely: the same warmest and coolest months, peak highs of 33°C and 32°C, and over 2300 hours of sun each. Museum counts are close too.

Which traveller are you?

Eating and going out: Skopje. It has roughly three times as many restaurants near the centre as Mostar and a wider spread of kitchens, plus about three times as many bars and clubs, most of them close to the middle.

Heritage first: Mostar. The two hold similar numbers of museums, but only Mostar has a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, which gives a short stay a clear focus.

Families and green space: Skopje. Twice as many attractions near the centre, far more park space, and 11% of the surrounding land protected against 6%. Neither city has a theme park, so days out lean on parks and walking.

What the numbers don't tell you

No daily cost figure exists for Mostar in this data, so the two cannot be compared on price at all, and nothing here indicates whether a day there costs more or less than in Skopje. The value ratings both carry rest on a different measure, not on a like-for-like budget.

Mostar's 7 nearby beaches do not add up to a swimming holiday: neither city has a month with sea at 21°C or more. And warmer does not mean drier. Mostar's higher summer highs come with autumn and winter rain near 200mm in the wettest months, while Skopje stays under 60mm all year.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Mostar: 1991-2020 normals, Mostar (0.9 km from centre). Skopje: 1991-2020 (sunshine 1961-1990, rainfall 1961-1990) normals, Skopje-Petrovec (18.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Mostar peaks in late spring, with highs of 25-30°C and rain easing to 71mm, before July and August settle at 33°C. From September the rain returns, above 140mm a month and heavier after that.

Skopje holds its form later. September stays at 26°C with only 32mm of rain, and no month there passes 58mm, so the shoulder seasons are more dependable. Midwinter is the weak point, with highs near 5°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
