Where they differ
Mostar packs far more into walking distance, with many times as many notable places near the centre as Sorrento and about twice as much park space, so a day there can be done on foot.
Sorrento is the water trip: 78 beaches nearby against Mostar's 7, and five months with the sea at 21°C or more. Its day trips also reach further, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within range against Mostar's 1, and a marginally larger share of protected land around the town.
Where they are alike
Neither is a food destination of scale. Sorrento has about twice as many restaurants near the centre, while Mostar offers a wider range of kitchens, so the two end level: a modest choice rather than a deep one.
Nightlife works out much the same: Sorrento has somewhat more places to drink, Mostar many times more nightclubs, and in both they sit near the centre. Heritage is close too, with Mostar's museums tightly grouped and Sorrento's reach wider.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming is the point of the trip, Sorrento is the only option of the two: 78 beaches within reach and a sea at 23-26°C through the summer, where Mostar offers no swimming to speak of.
A traveller who wants to walk everywhere should take Mostar. Its notable places, museums and park space are concentrated around the centre, so sightseeing needs no transport; Sorrento's are more scattered.
Families are less well served either way. Mostar has many times more attractions near the centre and more park space to use them in; Sorrento's draw is a single theme park within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
No cost comparison is possible here. The data carries a daily budget for Sorrento, about €155, and nothing equivalent for Mostar, so nothing in these figures says which is the cheaper trip. The value ranking rests on a separate measure that both cities share.
The beach and weather figures also compress into a short season. Sorrento's warm sea and near-dry midsummer fall in the months everyone else travels, in a town of 15,400 residents, so the strongest weeks are the busiest. Mostar's walkable centre, meanwhile, has to be walked in 33°C midsummer heat or under heavy autumn rain.
