The verdict

Choose Munich if the trip is about eating out, going out and keeping children busy: many more restaurants and kitchens, many more bars and clubs, and much more park space near the centre.

Choose Pisa if you want warmth and water: highs of 11-30°C across the year against Munich's 4-25°C, four months of sea at 21°C or more, and a centre small enough to cover on foot.

Where they differ

Munich has about three times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, many times as many bars and clubs, and many times as many attractions and park space within walking distance, which matters with children. Both have 2 theme parks within reach.

Pisa runs warmer all year, 11-30°C against Munich's 4-25°C, with four months of sea at 21°C or more; Munich's 6 nearby beaches never warm up. Pisa's smaller nightlife sits mostly near the centre.

Where they are alike

Heritage is where they sit closest. Pisa has 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Munich's 1, while Munich holds the larger collection of museums, so both support several days of sightseeing indoors and out.

Cost and countryside are close too. The national daily budget estimates are €163 for Germany and €155 for Italy, and while more of the land around Munich is protected, neither city is chosen mainly for its surroundings.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children: Munich. Many more attractions and much more park space within walking distance of the centre, and while both have 2 theme parks within reach, Munich gives you far more to fall back on in bad weather.

Eating and going out: Munich again. Roughly three times the restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, plus many times as many bars and clubs, about half of them central.

Sun and swimming: Pisa. Four months of sea at 21°C or more, highs reaching 30°C in summer, and a compact centre where the heritage and the few bars sit close together.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €155, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels for Germany and Italy, not measurements of Munich or Pisa. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own national average than these two figures sit from each other, so treat neither as the cheaper trip.

Warm does not mean dry. Munich's warmest months are also its wettest, so July heat comes with the year's heaviest rain, and Pisa's dry summer turns into the wettest autumn of the two. Counted beaches say nothing about water temperature: Munich has more nearby than Pisa, and no warm-water season at all.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre). Pisa: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (3.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Munich is at its best in July and August, with highs of 25°C, though those are also its wettest months at 117-121mm. September is the compromise: 20°C and 78mm.

Pisa works from June to September, 27-30°C by day with sea at 22-25°C, and July and August are its driest months at 32-35mm. Avoid October and November, when rainfall reaches 125-132mm while Munich stays under 70mm. Winter is thin in both, but Munich's January high of 4°C against Pisa's 11°C makes Pisa the more workable cold-season stop.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
