The verdict

Choose Munich if you want a city that works on foot: museums, places to eat and notable sights clustered near the centre, with attractions and park space for children, and you are happy with warm rather than swimmable summers.

Choose Rovinj if the trip is built around water: 55 beaches and four months of sea at 21°C or more, in a small town with little to fill a wet day.

Where they differ

Munich is the stronger city on foot: many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, many times as many restaurants and a wider range of kitchens, and far more tourist attractions and park space near the centre, which makes it the easier trip with children.

Rovinj is the one for swimming: 55 beaches against Munich's 6, and sea at 21°C or more for four months, which Munich never reaches. It also has 3 theme parks within reach against Munich's 2.

Where they are alike

Both are warm-summer, cool-winter places that peak in July, Munich at 25°C and Rovinj at 29°C, and neither has a dry month: rain falls in every month in both, with no month at 40mm or less.

Heritage and cost put them closer together. Each has 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and the national budget estimates behind the two countries are not far apart, though those are country-level figures rather than measurements of either town.

Which traveller are you?

Travelling with children and not set on swimming: Munich has many times as many tourist attractions and much more park space near the centre. Rovinj's counter is 3 theme parks within reach against Munich's 2.

If the holiday is swimming, Rovinj: 55 beaches against Munich's 6, and a sea that reaches 26°C in August. Munich has no equivalent, whatever the air temperature does in summer.

For museums, eating out and evenings, Munich: many times as many museums, restaurants and places to drink, and a much wider range of kitchens. Rovinj's handful of bars is at least all central.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 and €138, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited town can sit far from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two national figures, so they rank countries rather than trips.

The beach advantage is narrowly seasonal: the months when the sea reaches 21°C or more fall on a town of 13,000 residents, so the best weeks are also the busiest, and the autumn that follows is the wettest part of the year. Munich's strongest months are its wettest too, so plan a summer trip around rain.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre). Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Munich is at its best from June to August, with highs of 23-25°C, though these are also its wettest months at 107-121mm. September stays comfortable at 20°C and is drier, which makes it the easier month for walking the city.

Rovinj holds its season longer, June to September, with highs of 24-29°C and sea from 22-26°C. July is the driest of those months at 61mm, while autumn is its wettest stretch at 113-125mm.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
