Where they differ

Naples puts the sea 1km from its centre, with 29 beaches within reach, against one beach and 10km to the coast at Pisa. It also packs many times more notable places into walking distance, has a far deeper museum offering with more UNESCO-listed places in day-trip reach, and many times more bars and clubs, most of them central.

Pisa is smaller and quieter, with roughly twice as many tourist attractions near its centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens. Slightly more of the surrounding land is protected, 9% against 7%.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a base for wild country. The protected share of the land around each is similar, 9% around Pisa and 7% around Naples, and both have about the same amount of park space near the centre.

The weather is close as well: both peak in August, at 31°C in Naples and 30°C in Pisa, and their seas warm and cool together. Families find comparable ground too, Naples with more theme parks in reach, Pisa with more attractions on the doorstep.

If swimming shapes the trip, take Naples. The sea is 1km from the centre, 29 beaches are within reach, and it holds 21°C or more for five months of the year.

Travelling with children, Pisa is the calmer base: about twice as many tourist attractions sit near its centre, nights are quiet, and the country around it holds a slightly larger protected share.

For museums and evenings out, Naples again: roughly three times as many museums, many times more bars and clubs, and more notable places packed into walking distance of one another.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value comparison between these two carries no information. The figure behind it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it cannot say which city costs less. The €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city.

Naples's beach advantage describes the coast rather than the experience of it. The 29 beaches and the warmest sea arrive in the months when the city is hottest, at 31°C, and busiest, and the near-dry months are the crowded ones. Autumn looks mild by temperature alone, but November is the wettest month in both.

Naples is the better pick in high summer. July and August run about 31°C with under 20mm of rain, the sea reaches 26°C, and swimming works straight from the city, which Pisa cannot offer at its distance from the coast.

Pisa is easier in May and June, when 23-27°C suits walking and the rain stays moderate. Both turn wet in autumn, but Pisa more so, 125mm in October against 92mm, and its wet spell runs longer, so an autumn trip tilts back to Naples.
