The verdict

Choose Naples if the trip is about what you can walk to: museums, notable places packed close to the centre, and drinking and dancing until late, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

Choose Rovinj if the point is swimming and quiet. It is a town of 13,000 with 55 beaches nearby and very little nightlife, museum-going or sightseeing to distract from the water.

Where they differ

Naples has many times as many notable places within walking distance of its centre, and many times as many museums, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Rovinj's 1. It also has many times as many bars and nightclubs, most of them central, and more green space: 7% of the land around it is protected, against 2% around Rovinj.

Rovinj answers with the coast, 55 beaches nearby against Naples's 29, and a wider range of kitchens, though far fewer restaurants near the centre.

Where they are alike

Both put the sea 1km from the centre, and both reach 26°C in the water at the end of summer, so the swimming is comparable at the height of the season even though the coastlines differ.

They also share the same season shape: January is the coolest month in each and summer the warmest, and the national price levels behind them, €155 and €138 a day, sit close enough that the choice is unlikely to turn on cost.

Which traveller are you?

Someone travelling for museums and old streets should go to Naples. It has many times as many museums as Rovinj and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre, plus 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.

A swimmer who wants the days to end early belongs in Rovinj: 55 beaches nearby, the water 1km from the centre, and almost no bars, clubs or museums competing for the evening.

Families are better served in Naples, with about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre and far more park space, though both have 3 theme parks within reach and neither is built around children.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 and €138, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of Naples or Rovinj. A heavily visited coastal town or a large city can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so neither number tells you what your week will actually cost.

Rovinj's beach count belongs to a small town, so those 55 beaches are shared in the weeks when the sea is warmest. Its swimming window is the shorter of the two, and the months when crowds thin out are also its wettest.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Naples: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (28.3 km from centre). Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Naples holds up either side of summer: October still reaches 23°C, and July and August are its driest stretch at 17-18mm, when Rovinj has no month that dry. Its sea also stays swimmable later into the autumn.

Rovinj is at its best in July and August, 29°C with the sea at 26°C. From September the rain sits above 110mm a month, so its shoulder season is wetter than Naples's. Outside summer it turns cold, and the town has little to fall back on.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
