Travellers who find high summer heat difficult, or who want varied kitchens in a small city, will do better in Sarajevo, where August tops out near 28°C and the attractions sit close together in the centre.

What the numbers don't tell you

No daily cost figure exists for Sarajevo in this data, only for Naples, at €155 a day. That means the two cannot be set against each other on price at all, and the value ratings here rest on a different measure that both cities do have, not on what a trip actually costs.

Naples's beach and weather advantages land in the same months as its highest temperatures, 31°C in July and August, when the coast is busiest. Its shoulder months are not a quiet alternative either: rain rises sharply in autumn, to 159mm in November. Sarajevo has no dry window at all, with every month above 66mm.
