Where they differ
Naples is the livelier city after dark: many times as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs as Venice, most of them near the centre. It also has more open country within reach, 7% of the surrounding land protected against 4%, and about three times as much park space near its centre.
Venice works better with children, with many times as many tourist attractions close to the centre; both cities have 3 theme parks within reach, so the difference is what sits on your doorstep.
Where they are alike
Eating out is where they are closest. Naples has about twice as many restaurants near the centre; Venice offers a somewhat wider range of kitchens. Neither leaves you short, and neither is the reason to choose.
Both are compact heritage cities: notable places within walking distance of the centre, Venice with somewhat more; museums in both, Naples with somewhat more; and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach of each. Both also reach a sea of 26°C in August.
Which traveller are you?
Travelling with children: Venice, where tourist attractions cluster close to the centre and short walks replace transport. Naples answers with about three times as much park space near its centre, and both have 3 theme parks within reach.
Anyone whose evenings matter more than their mornings should go to Naples: many times as many bars and clubs as Venice, most of them near the centre, so a night out needs no planning.
Swimmers and walkers who want a base out of doors: Naples, with the sea 1km from the centre, 29 beaches nearby and 7% of the surrounding land protected.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison here carries no information. Both cities are given the same national price level, so it says nothing about which is cheaper, and the €155 daily budget beside it is one country-wide estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Judge cost from your own accommodation and travel choices instead.
Dry months are not automatically good months. Naples is driest in July and August at 17-18mm, which are also its hottest at 31°C; Venice is driest in January and February, when highs are 8-10°C. Naples's beach strength rests on the same August weeks everyone else travels.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Naples: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (28.3 km from centre). Venice: 1991-2020 normals, Treviso / S. Angelo (26.1 km from centre).
Naples holds up longest. June to September brings highs of 28-31°C, with July and August the driest months of the year at 17-18mm, and the sea sits at 21°C or more for five months. October is still 23°C, though autumn turns wet, 159mm in November.
Venice is at its best from June to August, at 28-30°C, with the sea reaching 26°C in August. May and September are warm enough but wet, 91mm and 106mm, and January highs of 8°C make winter the weaker season.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
