The verdict
Choose Naples if you want a city and the coast in one trip: 29 beaches nearby, a sea warm enough for swimming through summer, more museums, denser sights within walking distance and much more going on after dark.
Choose Verona if you are travelling with children, or want a smaller, quieter city where attractions and park space sit close together and the beach is not the point.

Where they differ
Naples has the coast to itself: 29 beaches nearby against Verona's 2, and five months when the sea reaches 21°C or more, where Verona has none. Evenings differ as sharply, with about three times as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre.
Verona answers with family travel: many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, somewhat more park space, and 4 theme parks within reach against Naples's 3, all in a far smaller city.
Where they are alike
Day trips are the weakest ground for both. Protected land runs at 9% around Verona and 7% around Naples, and park space near the centre is limited in both, with slightly more in Verona.
Eating out is close too. Naples has more restaurants near the centre while Verona spreads across a wider range of kitchens, and neither city is where you would travel for food alone. Summer heat matches as well, at 30-31°C.
Which traveller are you?
A traveller who wants swimming built into a city break should take Naples: 29 beaches nearby and a sea at 23-26°C in high summer, against 2 beaches and no swimmable sea in Verona.
Families are better served in Verona, which has many times as many tourist attractions near the centre, somewhat more park space and 4 theme parks within reach, in a city small enough to cross on foot.
Anyone travelling for museums, walkable sights and late nights wants Naples: many times as many museums, many more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and about three times as many places to drink.
What the numbers don't tell you
Value is not a point of difference here. The figure behind it is a national price level shared by both cities, so it says nothing about which of the two costs less, and the €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of Naples or Verona.
Naples's beach advantage is seasonal. The sea is warm enough to swim in for five months, and those are the same months that bring 31°C days and the heaviest visitor numbers. Outside them the coast is largely decorative, and late autumn is the wettest stretch of the year.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Naples: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (28.3 km from centre). Verona: 1991-2020 normals, Verona / Villafranca (11.6 km from centre).
Naples is at its best from June to September: highs of 28-31°C, sea at 23-26°C and a dry midsummer at 17-29mm. Autumn is heavier, with 92-159mm falling across October and November.
Verona has no coast, so its season is set by daytime warmth alone. May and early autumn suit it best, with highs of 24-25°C. Its summer never dries out as Naples's does, holding 62-85mm through the warm months, and winter highs drop to 7°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
