Where they differ
Nuremberg gives families far more to aim at, with many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach against 1. Evenings are broader too: about twice as many places to drink and about twice as many nightclubs, most of them near the centre.
Strasbourg fits about twice as many notable places into walking distance of the centre, so a short stay spends less time in transit, and it has about twice as much park space near the centre, useful with small children.
Where they are alike
Neither city is a swimming destination. Neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so the beaches listed near each are incidental rather than a reason to choose one.
Eating out is much the same: about as many restaurants near the centre in each, covering a similar range of kitchens. Weather tracks closely too, 4-25°C over the year in Nuremberg against 5-26°C in Strasbourg, and the national budget estimates, €163 and €160, sit close.
Which traveller are you?
Families with children who want plenty to do should take Nuremberg: many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 2 theme parks within reach against 1, though Strasbourg has more park space for slower days.
The museum-minded should take Nuremberg, which has about twice as many, with 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach of each city. Those who want it all on foot will prefer Strasbourg, where the collections sit tighter around the centre.
Anyone who plans around the evening should pick Nuremberg, with about twice as many places to drink and twice as many clubs, most near the centre. Strasbourg's evening choice is narrower and its strengths sit in daylight.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €163 and €160, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited city can sit further from its own country's average than these two national figures sit from each other, so neither is evidence about the cost of your trip.
The best-rated months are also among the wettest: July, Nuremberg's warmest month, brings the most rain of its year, and Strasbourg's May is wetter still. The driest months are also the coldest ones. And although beaches are counted near both, neither registers as a place to swim, so those counts should not sway the decision.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).
Nuremberg is at its best in high summer, July and August, both reaching 25°C, though July is also its wettest month at 77mm. Winter and early spring are drier here than they are in Strasbourg, though both cities are cold then.
Strasbourg handles the shoulder months better, 17°C in April and 22°C in September, when Nuremberg has already cooled. May is the exception, 77mm of rain against Nuremberg's 61mm. Its spring starts earlier and its autumn runs a little longer.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
