The verdict

Choose Nuremberg if the trip is about getting out of the city: 42% of the land around it is protected, and the centre is small enough that its restaurants, bars and attractions are within walking distance.

Choose Vienna if you want museums, evenings out and a dense centre: three times as many museums, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach and far more places to eat and drink.

Where they differ

Nuremberg's advantage is what surrounds it: 42% of the land around the city is protected against 4% around Vienna, so countryside starts close to town. Its nightlife is mostly near the centre, and it has somewhat more tourist attractions near the centre.

Vienna is the stronger city break: many times as many notable places within walking distance, about three times as many museums, 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Nuremberg's 1, three times as many bars and clubs, and twice as many restaurants near the centre.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a beach destination. Both are inland, and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is incidental to either trip rather than a reason to go.

They are close on climate and cost. Both have a January near 3-4°C, a July peak and a similar shape of year, and the national budget estimates behind them sit close together, at €163 for Germany and €160 for Austria.

Which traveller are you?

If you travel for museums and old buildings, Vienna: about three times as many museums as Nuremberg and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1, with most of what you would want to see within walking distance.

If the point of the trip is getting out of the city, Nuremberg: 42% of the surrounding land is protected against 4% around Vienna, so countryside days begin close to town rather than after a long journey.

Families are better served in Vienna, with 4 theme parks within reach and far more park space near the centre, though Nuremberg has somewhat more attractions near its centre and less ground to cover.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €163 for Germany and €160 for Austria, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A capital and a heavily visited city can both sit far from their country average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so neither reading tells you which trip costs more.

Vienna's larger counts come with distance: about half its drinking places sit near the centre, while Nuremberg's are mostly walkable from it. Beaches near either city are inland ones, and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Nuremberg: 1991-2020 normals, Nuernberg (5.5 km from centre). Vienna: 1991-2020 normals, Wien / Hohe Warte (4.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Nuremberg peaks in June to August at 23-25°C, though July is its wettest month at 77mm. Its edge is the shoulder season: April is dry at 33mm and May 61mm, both wetter in Vienna, and it has 4 months at 40mm or less across the year against Vienna's 1.

Vienna is the stronger summer city, warmer through June to August at 25-27°C and still 21°C in September, but May is wet at 80mm. October, at 47mm, is the better late option.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
