The verdict

Choose Pisa if you want a walkable centre of notable places, museums for a wet day and protected countryside within day-trip reach, accepting that the sea is a 10km trip rather than a stroll.

Choose Rovinj if swimming is the point of the holiday: the sea is 1km from the centre and 55 beaches lie nearby, with much less to occupy you away from the water.

Where they differ

Pisa packs many more notable places within walking distance of its centre, and many times as many museums, with 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Rovinj's 1. It also has the greener surroundings: 9% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Rovinj, and far more park space close to the centre.

Rovinj is built for swimming. The sea is 1km from its centre where Pisa's is 10km away, and there are 55 beaches nearby against one at Pisa.

Where they are alike

Both run on a similar yearly rhythm: Pisa's daytime highs span 11-30°C and Rovinj's 9-29°C, and each has 4 months with the sea at 21°C or warmer.

Neither is a place you would pick for eating alone. Pisa has about three times as many restaurants near the centre, Rovinj a wider spread of kitchens, and the national price levels behind the two are close enough that cost is unlikely to decide it.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone whose holiday is mostly swimming should go to Rovinj: the sea is 1km from the centre and 55 beaches sit nearby, so getting into the water needs no planning at all.

Travellers who want museums and heritage on foot should choose Pisa, where the notable places cluster in the centre and 3 UNESCO-listed places lie within day-trip reach, with more restaurants near the centre too.

Families split. Pisa has more attractions and far more park space near the centre, plus protected countryside around it; Rovinj offers easy sea and slightly more theme parks within reach, and little else.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €155 for Italy and €138 for Croatia, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of either city. A small coastal town and a mid-sized city can each sit well away from their country's average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so this is not evidence about what either trip will cost.

Rovinj's beach count belongs to a town of 13,000 residents, so the warmest months are also the months those beaches fill. Pisa's coast is 10km out, and its fine summer weather does not shorten that journey.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Pisa: 1991-2020 normals, Pisa / S. Giusto (3.9 km from centre). Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Pisa is the stronger bet in high summer. July and August are its driest months at 32-35mm, highs reach 30°C and the sea sits at 25°C, so beach days are a reliable plan rather than a gamble.

Rovinj is worth the trip in August, when its sea is at its warmest, 26°C, though the season builds more slowly and May carries 90mm of rain. Both turn wet from October onwards, above 100mm a month, and both stay cool and damp through winter.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
