Where they differ
Rovinj has 55 beaches nearby against Zurich's 23, and four months of sea at 21°C or more, where Zurich has none. Croatia's national daily budget, €138, sits well under Switzerland's €248, though that describes the two countries rather than these two places.
Zurich has many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, so days fill up on foot, and many times as many bars and clubs, most of them central too. Its range of restaurants and kitchens is much wider.
Where they are alike
Weather is where the two run closest overall. Both peak in July, both cool sharply at the end of the year, and neither has a dry month: nothing on either calendar falls to 40mm or less.
Neither is built around families, though both work for them: Rovinj has 3 theme parks within reach, Zurich 2. Each has 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip range, and in both the museums sit close to the centre rather than scattered.
Which traveller are you?
If the point of the trip is swimming, take Rovinj. It has 55 beaches within reach and a sea at 22-26°C in high summer, where Zurich has no month of swimmable sea at all.
Anyone travelling for restaurants, museums and late nights should take Zurich. The range of kitchens is much wider, there are many times as many bars and clubs, and most of it is walkable from the centre.
For walking and days out of town, Zurich again: 16% of the surrounding land is protected against 2% around Rovinj, and there is far more park space near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €138 and €248, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of either city. A small coastal town in high season and a large city can each sit far from their own country's average, by more than the gap between these two numbers, so read them as background on the countries, not as a forecast of your week.
The beach count is the other thing to watch: 55 beaches belong to a town of 13,000 residents, and the months when the sea is warm enough are the months everyone else arrives.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre). Zurich: 1991-2020 normals, Zurich Town / Ville. (2.2 km from centre).
Rovinj's window is June to August, with highs of 27-29°C and sea at 22-26°C. From September rain climbs above 110mm a month, so autumn there becomes a walking trip rather than a swimming one.
Zurich is warmest in July and August at 24°C, though those are also among its wettest months, near 120mm, so indoor fallbacks matter. September dries to 87mm and stays warm enough for the centre and its parks, which makes it the steadier choice.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
