Where they differ
Santiago de Compostela has more restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, and roughly three times as many bars and clubs. It also has more outdoors within reach: 11% of the surrounding land protected against 4% around Toledo, and about twice the park space near the centre.
Toledo is the better family trip, with many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 1 theme park where Santiago has none. It is also drier, with 11 months at 40mm of rain or less.
Where they are alike
Neither is a swimming destination. Toledo has 1 beach nearby and Santiago none, and neither sees a month of sea at 21°C or more; Santiago's water peaks at 17°C. Plan either trip around streets and buildings rather than water.
Both rest on old centres of similar weight: museum counts are close, each has 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and in both the notable buildings sit close enough to cover on foot, Toledo with somewhat more of them.
Which traveller are you?
Anyone travelling for food and evenings out should take Santiago de Compostela: more restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and roughly three times the bars and clubs, most of them close in.
Families do better in Toledo, which has many times as many tourist attractions near the centre and 1 theme park within reach; Santiago's counterweight is park space, about twice as much, which suits younger children.
Walkers who want country as well as town should choose Santiago: 11% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Toledo, with more park space and more to reach on a day out.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value comparison between these two carries no information. The figure behind it is a national price level, identical for both by construction, and the €122 a day quoted beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either city. Neither is the cheaper trip on this evidence, so compare accommodation and meals directly before deciding.
Toledo's warmer, drier year hides high summer at 35°C, which is hard work in a town you cover on foot, and its single nearby beach does not make it a swimming destination. Santiago's dry stretch is short, and the months either side of it are among the wettest.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Santiago de Compostela: 1991-2020 normals, Santiago / Labacolla (8.4 km from centre). Toledo: 1991-2020 normals, Toledo (2.3 km from centre).
Santiago is at its best in July and August, when highs reach 25°C and rainfall drops to 41-61mm. From October to December it turns wet, 208-223mm a month, with highs of only 12-19°C and short daylight.
Toledo has the longer season. May and September suit walking best, at 25°C and 29°C, while July and August push to 35°C. Rain is slight all year, so even winter stays dry, though days are short and cool.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
