Where they differ

Sarajevo is the stronger city for history: about three times as many museums as Skopje, and one UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach. It also has about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre.

Skopje has the better range of places to eat, about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider spread of kitchens. It also has about twice as much park space near the centre, and 11% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Sarajevo.

Where they are alike

Neither city is a swimming destination. There is no beach within reach of either, and neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so water plays no part in a trip to either.

They are also close on going out and on family travel. In both, most of the drinking places sit near the centre, and the two have roughly the same number of tourist attractions near their centres, neither with a theme park in reach.

For families and anyone wanting green space, Skopje again: about twice as much park space near the centre, and 11% of the surrounding land protected. Attraction numbers near the centre are similar in both, and neither has a theme park.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The data carries a daily budget for Skopje, about €72, and nothing equivalent for Sarajevo, so the value ranking rests on a different measure entirely. Treat Sarajevo's standing there as unpriced: nothing in this data says what a day there costs.

Warmth and comfort are not the same thing. Skopje's July and August highs of 32°C come with no beach or swimmable water in either city, so the hottest weeks offer nowhere to cool off. Sarajevo is cooler, but no month there drops to 40mm of rain or less, so even its best summer months carry rain.

Skopje's strongest stretch runs from May to June and again in September, when highs are around 26°C with just 32mm of rain. July and August reach 32°C, which is hot for walking the city, and the drier air holds through most of its year.
