Where they differ
Sarajevo is the denser city on foot, with many more notable places within walking distance of the centre and far more museums. It also has about twice as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider range of kitchens, and several times the bars and nightclubs.
Zadar answers with the coast: 49 beaches where Sarajevo has none, and sea above 21°C for four months. Its surroundings are wilder too, with 12% of the land around the city protected against 2% around Sarajevo, plus two UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Where they are alike
Neither city is built around children. Sarajevo has about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre and somewhat more park space, while Zadar has one theme park within reach where Sarajevo has none. Either way, it is a trip to plan around adults.
Both share January as their coolest month and both reach real summer heat, 28°C in Sarajevo and 31°C in Zadar. And in both, the places to drink cluster near the centre, so evenings need no transport.
Which traveller are you?
Swimmers, and anyone who wants the day to end in the water, should take Zadar: 49 beaches within reach and four months when the sea sits at 21°C or above.
Museum-goers and people who like to eat and drink their way round a small centre want Sarajevo: far more museums, roughly twice the restaurants near the centre, and a much wider choice of kitchens.
Walkers and day-trippers split. Zadar has far more protected land around it, 12% against 2%, while Sarajevo keeps more of its sights and its park space inside walking range of the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
There is no daily budget figure for Sarajevo in this data, so the two cannot be compared on cost at all. The value ratings rest on a different measure that both cities do have, and reading them as a price comparison would be a mistake. Zadar's own figure, €138 a day, stands alone.
No weather station near Zadar records sunshine hours, so that part of the weather picture is unmeasured rather than poor, and its monthly ratings rest on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. Its beach strength also lands in the same few months that draw the crowds.
When should you go?

Sarajevo is at its best from June to August, with highs of 25-28°C. Rain never really steps aside, 66-88mm right through the summer, and the shoulder months are wetter still.
Zadar has the longer season. May and June are warm and drying out; July and August are the driest months at 25-32mm, with the sea up to 25°C; September still swims at 23°C. Late autumn is heavy by contrast, with 117mm in November.
