Choose Split if you want a walkable centre with far more within reach on foot, more museums, a wider range of kitchens and more to do after dark.

Where they differ
Sorrento has one theme park within reach where Split has none, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip range against 4. The sea meets both centres, but it stays swimmable longer in Sorrento, five months at 21°C or more against four.
Split puts many times more notable places within walking distance of the centre, along with more tourist attractions and far more park space nearby. It has about three times as many museums, a wider range of kitchens, more places to drink and many more nightclubs.
Where they are alike
Beaches and swimming are the closest call. In both, the sea starts at the centre, the counts of nearby beaches are similar at 78 and 87, and the water is at its warmest in August.
The weather follows much the same shape: both peak at 31°C in high summer, both bottom out in January, and both are sunny for most of the year. Their countries' national daily budget estimates are also fairly close.
Which traveller are you?
A traveller whose days revolve around swimming should take Sorrento: the sea starts at the centre, reaches 26°C in August and stays warm enough to swim a month longer than Split's.
Anyone travelling for museums, old streets and evenings out is better served by Split, which has about three times as many museums, many more notable places within walking distance of the centre, and far more bars and clubs.
Families are a closer call. Split has far more attractions and park space near the centre, which suits short days with children; Sorrento's counter is the single theme park within reach.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €155 and €138, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels, not measurements of either city. A heavily visited coastal town can sit well above its own country's average by more than the gap between these two, so read them as country figures only.
Beach counts say nothing about how full the sand gets, and the warmest sea months are the ones everyone else picks. Sorrento's appeal leans on what is within day-trip reach rather than on the town itself, which means travel time. Its wettest month is heavy, at 159mm in November.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Sorrento: 1991-2020 normals, Grazzanise (53.6 km from centre). Split: 1991-2020 normals, Split / Marjan (0.9 km from centre).
Sorrento's best run is June to September. July is the driest month at 17mm, and the sea reaches 26°C in August. October stays warm enough for swimming, though the rain returns and evenings cool.
Split's own case is strongest in the shoulder months, May at 23°C and September, when its rainfall sits close to Sorrento's. Early summer is damper here, 49mm in June, and both turn wet in late autumn.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
