The verdict
Choose Amsterdam if the trip is built around museums, eating out and late evenings, where the choice is widest, with 33 beaches within reach if the weather turns generous.
Choose Heidelberg if you would rather walk than queue: over half the land around it is protected, summers run warmer, up to 26°C, and open country starts much closer to town.

Where they differ
Amsterdam has many times as many restaurants near the centre as Heidelberg, and a much wider range of kitchens; it also has many times as many bars and nightclubs. Museums are roughly twice as numerous, with 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Heidelberg's 4, and there are 33 beaches nearby against 6.
Heidelberg turns that round outdoors: 52% of the land around it is protected against 21% around Amsterdam, so hills and woodland are part of the daily view rather than a day's travel away.
Where they are alike
The two sit in countries with similar estimated daily budgets, €181 for the Netherlands and €163 for Germany, so national price levels give little reason to pick one over the other.
Their weather and their access to open land are close as well: winters are cool and summers mild rather than hot, neither gets a month at 40mm of rain or less, and both have protected country within reach and parks near the centre.
Which traveller are you?
Museum-and-restaurant travellers should take Amsterdam: about twice as many museums as Heidelberg, kept close to the centre, many times the restaurant choice and a far wider range of kitchens, plus most of the drinking places nearby.
Walkers and day-trippers are better served in Heidelberg, where 52% of the surrounding land is protected against 21%, so trails and open landscape need less travel; Amsterdam answers with more park space near the centre.
Families lean to Amsterdam: about three times as many attractions near the centre, twice the park space, 3 theme parks within reach against 1, and 33 beaches against 6, though the sea stays cool.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €181 and €163, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either city. A capital or a heavily visited town can sit well away from its own country's average, by more than the gap between these two, so read them as background rather than as a verdict on what either trip will cost.
The beach count also flatters Amsterdam: 33 beaches nearby, but the sea never passes 19°C, and the warmest months are also among the wettest. Heidelberg has no sea temperatures recorded at all.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Amsterdam: 1991-2020 normals, De Bilt (35.3 km from centre). Heidelberg: 1991-2020 normals, Heidelberg (4.5 km from centre).
Amsterdam works best in high summer, with highs of 21-23°C in July and August and the sea at its warmest then, 19°C. Rain never really stops: April is the driest month at 42mm, while the summer months run 71-85mm.
Heidelberg is warmer through the same stretch and holds its warmth later, reaching 26°C at midsummer and still 21°C in September with 56mm against Amsterdam's 78mm, which makes early autumn walking weather rather than a washout.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
