Where they differ
Amsterdam has many times as many museums as Manchester, and they cluster tightly around the centre; it also has 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Manchester's 2. For families it has far more tourist attractions near the centre, and 3 theme parks within reach against 2.
Manchester's counter on these fronts is narrow: it has more park space near the centre, which matters if a day out means open ground rather than ticketed attractions. The land around it is a little less protected, 17% against Amsterdam's 21%.
Where they are alike
Neither city deals in extremes of temperature. Amsterdam runs 6-23°C across the year and Manchester 7-21°C, and neither has a month at 40mm of rain or less, so a waterproof is part of the packing list whenever you go.
Nights out follow the same pattern in both: the drinking places and clubs sit near the centre, so an evening can be walked. Both are inland, with the sea about 24km and 27km away and never warm enough for casual swimming, so the coast is an outing rather than the point.
Which traveller are you?
A traveller here for museums and heritage should pick Amsterdam: many times more museums than Manchester, held close to the centre, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach rather than 2.
For a weekend of eating and going out, the two are closest. Amsterdam has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens; Manchester covers the same ground on a smaller scale.
Parents get more out of Amsterdam, with far more attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach against 2, though Manchester's greater central park space suits children who mainly need room to run.
What the numbers don't tell you
No daily cost figure exists for Manchester in this data, so the two cannot be compared on price at all. Amsterdam's €181 a day stands on its own, and the value-for-money ratings rest on a different measure that both cities do have; read them as a ranking, not as a price tag.
Amsterdam's 33 nearby beaches describe access rather than swimming: the water peaks at 19°C in August and the coast is 24km from the centre. Its warmest months are also among its wettest, so the weeks that look best on temperature are not the driest ones.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Amsterdam: 1991-2020 normals, De Bilt (35.3 km from centre). Manchester: 1991-2020 normals, Manchester Airport (14.8 km from centre).
Amsterdam is the stronger summer pick, with highs of 23°C in July and August and the sea at its warmest, 19°C. April is its driest month at 42mm, worth knowing given that July and August each bring over 84mm.
Manchester peaks lower, at 21°C in July, but that month is drier there, 60mm against 85mm. Its autumn tips the other way: October reaches 95mm, so a late-year trip is better spent in Amsterdam.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
