Where they differ
Amsterdam is the stronger choice for museums and nights out: many times as many museums, 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1, and far more places to drink and dance, most near the centre. It also has about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, and 33 beaches nearby against 9.
Strasbourg runs warmer, peaking at 26°C in high summer against Amsterdam's 23°C, and has more open country to work with: 37% of the land around it is protected against 21%, with more park space near the centre.
Where they are alike
The two sit closest on cost. The national estimates behind them, €181 for the Netherlands and €160 for France, cover restaurant and hotel price levels at country level, so neither trip lands at an extreme of European pricing.
They also share a yearly rhythm: July is the warmest month in both, January the coolest with highs of 5-6°C, and each gets close to 1700 hours of sunshine. Both have protected countryside and parkland within reach for days out.
Which traveller are you?
A traveller in it for museums and evening life should take Amsterdam: many times as many museums as Strasbourg, 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 1, and far more bars and clubs, nearly all near the centre.
Families will find more to fill a week in Amsterdam, with many times as many attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach against 1, though Strasbourg has more park space for younger children.
Walkers and warm-weather travellers who prefer quiet days out are better served by Strasbourg: 37% of the surrounding land is protected, summers reach 26°C, and the central sights stay within an easy walk.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €181 and €160, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of Amsterdam or Strasbourg. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit well above its own country average, by more than the gap between the two figures, so this says nothing about which of these two trips will cost you more.
The beach count needs the same care: Amsterdam has 33 beaches nearby, but neither city has a month of sea reaching 21°C, so those are places to walk rather than swim. Amsterdam's warmest months are also its wettest, and Strasbourg's driest run falls in its coldest months.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Amsterdam: 1991-2020 normals, De Bilt (35.3 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).
Amsterdam is at its best from June to August, when highs sit at 21-23°C and the sea reaches 19°C in August. Those months are also its wettest, 71-85mm, while April is the driest at 42mm with highs of 15°C.
Strasbourg is warmer in the same window, 24-26°C from June to August, and drier by late summer at 61-72mm, though May brings 77mm. Its driest stretch is January to March, 34-39mm, but highs are only 5-12°C then.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
