The verdict

Choose Bologna if you want evenings out, a wider choice of kitchens, and parks and protected countryside within easy reach of a compact centre.

Choose Venice if the trip is about the water and about seeing a lot on foot: 20 beaches nearby against Bologna's 2, sea warm enough to swim in for four months, and far more packed into walking distance.

Where they differ

Bologna is the better base for days out: 7% of the land around it is protected against 4% around Venice, and it has many times more park space near the centre. Evenings differ too, with about twice as many places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, most of them central, and a wider range of kitchens.

Venice concentrates its interest tightly: about three times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, and 5 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Bologna's 3.

Where they are alike

The weather is close to identical: both run from 7-8°C in January to around 30-32°C at the peak of summer, with January the coolest month in each. Bologna is marginally the warmer and the drier of the two.

They are also matched for families and for heritage. Venice leans on attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach, Bologna on park space, and the two hold roughly as many museums as each other.

Which traveller are you?

Anyone travelling with children will find Venice the easier fit, with about twice as many tourist attractions near the centre and 3 theme parks within reach, though Bologna answers with far more park space for unstructured days.

Eaters and late-night travellers should take Bologna. It has a much wider range of kitchens, more places to drink and many times as many nightclubs, nearly all of them close to the centre.

Anyone whose holiday involves swimming has only one real option. Venice has 20 beaches nearby against Bologna's 2, and the sea reaches 26°C in August, while Bologna has no coast to fall back on.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure here is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so the comparison between these two cities carries no information about cost. The €155 daily budget beside it is one national estimate rather than a measurement of either place.

Venice's warmest sea months are also among its wettest, with 106mm in September, and its interest is packed into one small area, so the walkability that looks like an advantage comes with the crowds that fill it in high summer. Bologna's driest stretch is also its hottest, at 32°C, with no swimming to retreat to.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bologna: 1991-2020 normals, Bologna / Borgo Panigale (5.5 km from centre). Venice: 1991-2020 normals, Treviso / S. Angelo (26.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bologna is at its best in May and June, with highs of 24-29°C and 37-50mm of rain, and July stays dry while reaching 32°C. Autumn is the weak spot, when the rain arrives and evenings cool.

Venice is worth timing to the water, from June to August, when the sea is warm enough to swim. Rain is the sharper divide: Venice takes 106mm in September against Bologna's 75mm, and it is the wetter city in most months.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-09, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
