Choose Bratislava if you want the fuller city: more places to eat and across more kitchens, more bars and clubs, and more parkland, with a good deal more protected countryside within day-trip reach.
Choose Sarajevo if a compact centre is enough on its own, you like your summers a little warmer, reaching 28°C in July and August, and you don't mind a wetter autumn to get it.

Where they differ
Bratislava has about twice as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, roughly twice as many places to drink and three times as many nightclubs. It also has more room to get out: 14% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Sarajevo, and about twice as much park space near the centre.
Sarajevo runs the warmer of the two. Its peak comes in July and August at 28°C against 27°C, and October still reaches 17°C where Bratislava has 15°C.
Where they are alike
Weather is where the two overlap most. Both start the year near 3-4°C, climb on much the same curve through spring, and still hold 22°C in September, so the usable season and the cold months line up closely.
They also feel similar on foot, with a comparable number of notable places inside a walkable centre. Neither is a place to swim, so summer in either means a city and countryside trip.
Which traveller are you?
Someone travelling for the eating and the evenings should take Bratislava: about twice as many restaurants near the centre, a much wider spread of kitchens, roughly three times as many nightclubs, and most of the drinking close in.
Families are better served in Bratislava too. The two hold similar numbers of attractions near the centre, but Bratislava has about twice as much park space and 1 theme park within reach, where Sarajevo has none.
For a short heritage break on foot, either works, since walkable density is much the same. Bratislava edges it with 2 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Sarajevo's 1, and 14% protected land around it for a day out.
What the numbers don't tell you
Cost is the gap. Bratislava carries a daily budget of €132; no equivalent figure exists for Sarajevo, so the two cannot be set against each other on what a day costs. The value ranking is built from a different measure that both cities do have, so don't read it as a price comparison, and don't assume either city is the cheaper trip until you have priced it yourself.
The beach count also misleads: Bratislava has 36 beaches nearby, but they are inland water, and neither city has a month of swimming-warm water. Summer warmth comes with rain in both, the wettest months falling in the season you would travel.
When should you go?

Sarajevo peaks later and slightly warmer, 28°C through July and August, and August is its driest month at 66mm. October still reaches 17°C, but it is also the wettest month of its year at 91mm, and rain sits near 85-90mm from September to December.
