The verdict

Choose Bucharest if you want the warmer summer, with August highs near 31°C, and a wider range of kitchens rather than the biggest choice of restaurants.

Choose Budapest if museums and heritage matter, including a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and if you want far more places to eat and drink, most of them within walking distance of the centre.

Where they differ

Bucharest offers a somewhat wider range of kitchens and runs warmer through the year, with daytime highs of 3-31°C against Budapest's 4-28°C. It also has more park space near the centre, and 2 theme parks within reach against Budapest's 1.

Budapest has about twice as many museums, and a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach where Bucharest has none. It has roughly three times as many restaurants near the centre and about twice as many places to drink, most of them within walking distance.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both sit inland with no month of sea at 21°C or more; nearby bathing amounts to 6 beaches around Budapest and 3 around Bucharest.

Their weather years track each other closely, coldest in January and warmest in August, with much the same annual sunshine. Both work for families, with attractions, parks and theme parks within reach, and both have only limited protected countryside around them for day trips.

Which traveller are you?

Museum-led city breaks point to Budapest: about twice as many museums as Bucharest, a UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and roughly twice as many notable sites within walking distance of the centre.

For eating out and late nights, Budapest again, with far more restaurants near the centre and about twice as many places to drink, most of them central. Bucharest answers with a somewhat wider range of kitchens.

Families can go either way. Budapest has about twice as many attractions near the centre; Bucharest has more park space and 2 theme parks within reach against Budapest's 1, which counts with younger children.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €99 in Bucharest's country and €104 in Budapest's, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels rather than measurements of either city. A capital can sit well above its country's average, and by more than the gap between these two figures, so they settle nothing about which city costs more.

Budapest's driest months are its coldest, with the low-rainfall run falling in winter when highs sit near 4°C, so dry does not mean comfortable. Bucharest's extra warmth arrives as August highs of 31°C, which is harder work on foot than a table suggests.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Bucharest: 1991-2020 normals, Bucuresti / Imh (10 km from centre). Budapest: 1991-2020 normals, Budapest Met Center (2.1 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Bucharest suits May and September, when daytime highs sit around 24°C rather than the 31°C of high summer and walking the city is easier. June is the wettest month of its year at 82mm, so early summer plans there benefit from some flexibility.

Budapest is the steadier bet across full summer, June to August, when highs top out near 28°C, short of Bucharest's peak. Its spring is drier too: April brings 37mm against Bucharest's 49mm, which favours an early-season trip.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
