The verdict

Choose Budapest if you want the fuller city: a wide choice of restaurants and bars, plenty of museums, and enough attractions, parks and one theme park to fill days with children.

Choose Mostar if heat and a small, walkable centre matter more than variety. Summer days reach 33°C, the sights sit tightly together, and you can take the place in without a long list.

Where they differ

Budapest has many times as many restaurants near the centre, and a much wider range of kitchens, so eating out varies rather than repeats. It also has many times as many bars and clubs, most of them near the centre, and for families many times as many attractions and park space, plus 1 theme park within reach where Mostar has none.

Mostar runs warmer through the year, 9-33°C against 4-28°C, with 2414 hours of sunshine, and its museums sit tightly around a centre you can cross on foot.

Where they are alike

Neither is a swimming destination. Both list a handful of nearby beaches, 6 for Budapest and 7 for Mostar, but neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so water is an occasional outing rather than a reason to book either.

The two are also close on year-round weather and on value. Both are warmest in August and coolest in January, and both come out well on value against the wider field.

Which traveller are you?

Someone travelling to eat and drink should take Budapest. It has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a wider spread of kitchens, plus many times as many bars and clubs, most within walking distance.

A family with children is better served in Budapest too: many times as many attractions near the centre, far more park space, and 1 theme park within reach, where Mostar has none.

A walker on a short break who wants warmth should pick Mostar. Its museums and notable places sit tightly around a small centre, and daytime highs run to 33°C in high summer, well above Budapest's.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. The data carries a daily budget for Budapest, about €104 a day, and none at all for Mostar, so nothing here says which city is cheaper on the ground. The value ratings rest on a different measure both cities have, and should not be read as prices.

Both list nearby beaches, yet neither has a month with sea at 21°C or more, so swimming is incidental rather than a reason to choose either. In Mostar the warmest months are also the driest: September looks appealing on temperature but brings 143mm of rain.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Budapest: 1991-2020 normals, Budapest Met Center (2.1 km from centre). Mostar: 1991-2020 normals, Mostar (0.9 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Budapest is at its best from June to September, with highs of 26-28°C and summer rain peaking at 75mm; early spring is drier at 30-37mm but much cooler. Winter highs sit at 4°C, which makes it an indoor trip.

Mostar suits May and June, at 25-30°C. Midsummer is hotter at 33°C but driest, near 54mm. Late autumn and winter turn heavy, with rainfall climbing above 190mm by December, so the shoulder months are the safer bet.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
