Where they differ

Budapest has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a somewhat wider range of kitchens, plus about three times as many museums and 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach where Zagreb has none. The family gap is the widest of all: far more attractions near the centre, twice the park space, and a theme park within reach.

Zagreb runs a little warmer through the year, 5-29°C against 4-28°C, keeps its museums more tightly around the centre, and has slightly more protected land nearby, 9% against 8%.

Where they are alike

Neither city offers a swimming holiday. Zagreb counts 8 beaches nearby against Budapest's 6, but neither reaches a month of water at 21°C or more, so bathing means a warm afternoon by fresh water rather than a coast.

They also land level on value for money, and their weather years run in parallel: January highs of 4-5°C, summers topping out at 28-29°C, and the same late-spring-to-September stretch carrying the trip in both.

A quieter, compact break suits Zagreb, where the museums sit tightly around the centre and the nightlife is smaller and more scattered, with marginally more protected land around the city and slightly warmer summer afternoons.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €104 for Hungary and €138 for Croatia, are national price levels for restaurants and hotels rather than measurements of either city. Both are capitals that draw visitors, and the distance between a capital and its own country average can exceed the gap between the two national numbers.

The beach counts flatter both: neither reaches a month of water at 21°C or more, so swimming here is a hot-afternoon outing, not a coastal holiday. And in both cities the warmest months are also among the wettest, so a good summer month is warm rather than reliably dry.

Budapest's best stretch is June to September, with highs of 26-28°C and September still at 22°C on 48mm of rain. Its winter and early spring are dry, under 40mm a month, which makes a cold city break workable.

Zagreb warms a little earlier and peaks hotter, 29°C in July, but is wetter than Budapest in every month of the year, including 104mm in September when Budapest is drier and still warm. May to August is its window; autumn stays wet.
