Where they differ

Toronto has 58 beaches against Calgary's 4, and lake water reaching 21°C, which Calgary cannot match. It also has many times as many museums, tightly grouped around the centre, and about three times as many places to drink, plus many more nightclubs.

Calgary's advantage lies outside the centre: 4% of the surrounding land is protected against 2% around Toronto, and about twice as much park space near the centre. It is also drier, with 8 months at 40mm of rain or less where Toronto has none.

Where they are alike

The closest match is the weather. Both follow the same shape of year: July highs of 25°C in Calgary and 27°C in Toronto, and midwinter days at or just below 0°C in both. Neither is a winter-warm destination.

Beyond that, both are modest for day trips, with little protected land around either, and both offer a similar range of kitchens, even if Toronto's is spread across more restaurants.

Which traveller are you?

For museums, bars and late nights, Toronto: many times as many museums, most of them close to the centre, roughly three times as many places to drink, and far more notable places within walking distance of your hotel.

Families with children are better served in Toronto, which has many more tourist attractions near the centre and 58 beaches with lake swimming at 21°C in August. Calgary counters with more park space and 5 theme parks against 4.

Walkers and anyone planning days out of town should pick Calgary: a larger protected share of the land around it, about twice the park space near the centre, and reliably drier summer months.

What the numbers don't tell you

The value figure is a national price level, identical for both by construction, so it says nothing about which trip costs less. The dataset carries no daily budget for either city, so no cost comparison between Calgary and Toronto is possible.

No weather station near either city records sunshine hours, so that side of the comparison is unmeasured rather than poor; the monthly picture rests on temperature, rainfall and sea temperature alone. Calgary's dry advantage also falls partly in months few would travel for: January and February are dry but sit at 0°C or below. Toronto's beach count likewise rests on a single month of lake water at 21°C.

Toronto's warm window runs longer, June to September at 22-27°C, with lake water at 20-21°C in high summer for swimming. Rain is spread evenly rather than seasonal, never under 51mm in any month, so a dry run is less predictable.
