Choose Sydney if you want water warm enough to swim in for half the year, a far larger choice of restaurants and bars, and attractions, parks and theme parks that suit children.

Where they differ
Cape Town is the drier and sunnier: six months bring 40mm of rain or less, where Sydney has none, and the sea starts 1km from the centre. Its museums cluster near the middle of town, and 3 UNESCO-listed places sit within day-trip reach.
Sydney has the greater scale: about three times as many restaurants near the centre, many times as many places to drink, twice as many notable places within walking distance, and more for children, with more park space and 2 theme parks where Cape Town has none.
Where they are alike
Both are beach cities, and swimming is part of a trip to either. Cape Town's coast starts 1km from the centre and Sydney's beaches lie further out at 7km, though both keep sand within easy reach.
They also stand close on heritage and weather. Each has museums worth a day or two and UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, and both run daytime highs of about 18-28°C across the year, with July the coolest month in each.
Which traveller are you?
If swimming matters most, Sydney: its sea sits at 21°C or more for half the year and reaches 23°C in summer, with far more beaches to choose from. Cape Town's water stays at 15-18°C year-round, cold for long swims.
Families are better served in Sydney, with more attractions near the centre, much more park space and 2 theme parks within reach, against none at Cape Town, plus more protected land for days out.
A traveller after sun, dry days and heritage on foot should pick Cape Town, with 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach, museums grouped near the centre, and more sunshine hours in the year than Sydney.
What the numbers don't tell you
No daily budget figure exists for either city in this data, so the two cannot be compared on cost at all. What sits under value is built on a different measure, and says nothing about what a day will cost in either place; check prices yourself before deciding.
The two also stand level on beaches for opposite reasons. Cape Town puts the sea 1km from the centre but holds it at 15-18°C; Sydney's 160 beaches are warm enough for much of the year but begin 7km out, so a beach day needs transport. Cape Town's good weather is also packed into a narrower part of the year than Sydney's.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Cape Town: 1991-2020 normals, Cape Town Airport (17.5 km from centre). Sydney: 1991-2020 normals, Sydney Airport (3.7 km from centre).
Cape Town is at its best from December to February, when highs run 26-28°C and rainfall falls to 10-13mm. October and November are nearly as good, and drier than anything Sydney offers. Winter, June to August, is cool at 18°C and wet, with 76-97mm a month.
Sydney's stronger stretch is October to December, with its driest months, though rain never drops below about 55mm. For swimming, wait for January to March, when the sea reaches 23°C.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
