The verdict

Choose Innsbruck if you want a walkable centre with museums and a wide choice of places to eat, and mountain country immediately beyond it: 31% of the surrounding land is protected.

Choose Rovinj if the sea decides the trip. It has 55 beaches nearby and a long warm swimming season, in a small town where the evenings are quiet and there is little to see indoors.

Where they differ

Innsbruck has the open country: 31% of the land around it is protected against 2% around Rovinj, and there is far more park space near the centre. Its centre also holds many times as many notable buildings within walking distance, which makes a day on foot straightforward to fill.

Rovinj answers on the water: 55 beaches nearby against Innsbruck's 10, and four months of sea at 21°C or more, where Innsbruck has none. Swimming is the reason to go.

Where they are alike

Weather is where they sit closest. Both peak in July and are at their coolest in January, both log a good deal of sun over the year, and both top out in summer at 26°C and 29°C rather than anything punishing.

The other near ties run together: each has one UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and the national price levels behind them sit close rather than in different brackets.

Which traveller are you?

Someone who wants museums, restaurants and evenings out should take Innsbruck: many times as many museums as Rovinj, about twice as many restaurants near the centre, and roughly three times as many bars and clubs.

A swimmer or beach holidaymaker belongs in Rovinj: 55 beaches nearby, and four months when the sea passes 21°C, against a mountain city with no swimming season at all.

Families are split. Innsbruck has about three times as many attractions near the centre and much more park space; Rovinj offers 3 theme parks within reach against 2, plus easy swimming.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget figures, €160 for Austria and €138 for Croatia, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels, not measurements of either town. A heavily visited coastal place of 13,000 people can sit well above its own country average in summer, and that gap can be larger than the gap between the two countries.

And the warmest months are not the driest: Innsbruck's best stretch is also when it rains hardest, up to 144mm, while Rovinj's beach count says nothing about how crowded those beaches get at the same time of year.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Innsbruck: 1991-2020 normals, Innsbruck-Flughafen (3.3 km from centre). Rovinj: 1991-2020 normals, Trieste (63.7 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Innsbruck works best from June to September, with highs of 21-26°C. That is also its wettest stretch, reaching 144mm in August, so build in indoor options.

Rovinj's season is longer. The sea holds at 21°C or more for four months, and midsummer is comparatively dry at 61-78mm. Autumn is the catch: 113-125mm falls from September through November, months whose warmth otherwise reads well. Winter days stay milder there than in Innsbruck.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
