The verdict

Choose Lisbon if you want a wide choice of places to eat, bars and clubs worth staying out for, more museums, and beaches within reach in the warm months.

Choose Toledo if you want a small historic city you can cross on foot, dry weather through most of the year, and you don't mind that eating out and nightlife are both limited.

Where they differ

Lisbon has many times as many restaurants near the centre and a much wider range of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs. It also has 24 beaches nearby against Toledo's 1, although the sea only reaches 19°C at its warmest.

Toledo is the drier of the two, with 11 months at 40mm of rain or less against Lisbon's 4, and it runs hotter in high summer, with highs near 35°C. Its museums, fewer in number, sit tightly around the centre.

Where they are alike

The two sit closest on cost. The estimated daily budget is €109 for Portugal and €122 for Spain, national figures rather than city measurements, so price is unlikely to decide this one.

Their weather profiles are also close: both get long hours of sunshine, and both cool to winter highs of 12-15°C rather than anything harsher. For families, each has one theme park within reach, and park space near the centre in both, though Lisbon has more.

Which traveller are you?

Someone travelling to eat and drink well should choose Lisbon: many times as many restaurants near the centre, a far wider spread of kitchens, and many times as many bars and clubs.

Families are better served in Lisbon too, with many more attractions near the centre, more park space, and 24 beaches nearby, though the sea tops out at 19°C. Each city has one theme park within reach.

A traveller after old streets and a short walking itinerary can take Toledo, where museums and notable places cluster tightly in a small centre. Lisbon has far more of both, and 3 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against 2.

What the numbers don't tell you

The daily budget is a national estimate, €109 for Portugal and €122 for Spain, covering restaurant and hotel price levels across each country rather than either city. A capital and a heavily visited historic town can both sit well away from their national average, by more than the gap between these two figures, so neither number tells you what your week will cost.

Beach count is not swimming weather: Lisbon's sea never reaches 21°C, and its driest, warmest months are also the ones most people travel in. Toledo's dry summer arrives with 35°C, its least comfortable stretch on foot.

When should you go?

The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.

Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Lisbon: 1991-2020 normals, Lisboa / Geof (1.1 km from centre). Toledo: 1991-2020 normals, Toledo (2.3 km from centre).

WorseBetter

Lisbon works best from June to September, when highs sit at 26-28°C and rain nearly stops, around 3mm in July. The sea is at its warmest, 19°C, at the end of that run. Autumn is a different city, with over 100mm of rain a month.

Toledo suits late spring and early autumn: 25°C in May, 29°C in September, and dry, as almost every month there is. July and August push to 35°C, hot for a city you see on foot.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
