Where they differ

Liverpool's edge is the coast and the compactness. It has beaches within reach and a sea that warms to 17°C by August; London offers no swimming of that kind. Its bars and clubs cluster near the centre, so an evening out is walkable rather than a series of journeys.

London's advantage is density: many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, and many times as many bars, with about three times as many nightclubs. Only about half sit centrally, so nights out involve more travel.

Where they are alike

Neither city gets hot. Both peak in July, London at 24°C and Liverpool at 21°C, and both sit at 7-8°C at the coldest point of winter. Rain falls in every month in both, so weather planning is the same exercise either way.

Families and open air are close too: both have 3 theme parks within reach and about the same park space near the centre, so a trip mixing green space and a day out works from either base.

Which traveller are you?

Museum and gallery travellers should take London. It has many times as many museums, 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Liverpool's 2, and far more notable places within walking distance of the centre.

Families are better served in London, with about three times as many attractions near the centre. Both hold 3 theme parks within reach and similar park space, so Liverpool works if you want less ground to cover.

Anyone after sea and open air should pick Liverpool. It is the only one of the two where swimming exists at all, at 16-17°C in high summer, and its day-trip options are the stronger part of the trip.

What the numbers don't tell you

No cost comparison is possible here. There is no daily budget for either city, and the value figure behind that axis is a national price level, identical for the two by construction. It carries no information about which trip works out dearer, so price accommodation and eating out yourself.

Liverpool's beach advantage is relative. The sea peaks at 17°C and never reaches 21°C, so swimming is brief rather than a reason to plan around. The warmest months are also among Liverpool's wetter ones, so a warm forecast and a dry one are not the same month.

Liverpool works best in July and August, when highs reach 20-21°C and the sea is 16-17°C, the only stretch warm enough to swim. Rain rises afterwards, to 95mm in October.

London's season is longer and drier. Highs run 18-24°C from May to August, and spring rainfall of 38-46mm a month sits well below Liverpool's 51-61mm, so spring city days are a safer bet there. Its summer is also the warmer of the two by a clear margin, which matters for long days on foot.
