The verdict
Choose Marseille if the sea is the point: 64 beaches within reach, water warm enough to swim in late summer, a warmer year overall and more choice for eating out and going out.
Choose Strasbourg if you would rather walk and be outdoors: much more protected land around the city, far more park space near the centre, and the same walkable density of notable places.

Where they differ
Marseille has 64 beaches nearby against Strasbourg's 9, and a sea that reaches 21°C or more in late summer, which Strasbourg cannot match. It runs warmer all year, 12-31°C against 5-26°C, with twice as many months at 40mm of rain or less, and roughly twice as many bars and nightclubs.
Strasbourg is the greener option: 37% of the land around it is protected against 15% around Marseille, and it has far more park space near the centre, which makes it the better base for days outdoors.
Where they are alike
The two are closest on how much sits within walking distance of the centre: in each, a similar number of notable places sits in a compact core, so both work as cities you cover on foot rather than by transport.
Eating out is comparable in range, if not in number of restaurants, and both put most of their bars near the centre. On heritage, each has 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and neither is geared towards children.
Which traveller are you?
A summer traveller who wants to swim should take Marseille: 64 beaches nearby, a sea at 21-22°C in late summer, and warmer daytime highs than Strasbourg manages at any point in its year.
Anyone planning days outdoors, walking or cycling is better served by Strasbourg, where 37% of the surrounding land is protected and there is far more park space near the centre than in Marseille.
For eating out and late nights, Marseille has roughly twice the restaurants and twice the bars and clubs near the centre, though the range of kitchens is much the same in both.
What the numbers don't tell you
The value figure is a national price level, identical for both cities by construction, so it tells you nothing about which is cheaper. The €160 daily budget beside it is one national estimate, not a measurement of either place. Judge cost on your own accommodation and travel.
Marseille's beach strength rests on a short season: the sea only reaches 21°C or more at the very end of summer, and the dry summer is followed by 82mm in September, when many visitors assume the warmth holds. Strasbourg's best months for warmth are also its wettest, so summer there is no promise of dry days.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Marseille: 1991-2020 normals, Marseille / Marignane (20.6 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).
Marseille is the stronger choice from May to September, with highs of 24-31°C and a sea reaching 21-22°C in late summer. July is its driest month, at 11mm, while autumn brings 72-82mm.
Strasbourg peaks from June to August at 24-26°C, but that is also when it rains most, at 61-72mm a month. Its shoulder months are drier but noticeably cooler than Marseille's, and winter highs of 5-6°C make it a poor off-season bet.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
