The verdict
Choose Munich if you want a big city's range: far more museums, many more bars and nightclubs, and the stronger set of attractions and parks for children, with about twice as many notable places within walking distance of the centre.
Choose Strasbourg if you want somewhere smaller and quieter, with warmer and drier days, most of its bars close to the centre and more protected countryside around it.

Where they differ
Munich has about three times as many museums as Strasbourg and many times as many places to drink and nightclubs. It is also the stronger city for children: many more attractions near the centre, considerably more park space, and 2 theme parks within reach against Strasbourg's 1.
Strasbourg is the greener option, with 37% of the land around it protected against 17% around Munich. It runs slightly warmer through the year and drier, with three months at 40mm or less where Munich has none.
Where they are alike
Neither is a place to swim. Strasbourg counts 9 beaches within reach and Munich 6, but both are inland and neither has a month of sea at 21°C or more, so swimming means a lake trip rather than a reason to go.
They are close on eating out: Munich has more restaurants near the centre, but the range of kitchens is similar. Each has 1 UNESCO-listed place within day-trip reach, and the national price levels behind them are identical.
Which traveller are you?
Travelling with children: Munich. More attractions sit near the centre, there is far more park space to break up a day, and 2 theme parks are within reach against Strasbourg's 1.
After museums and long evenings: Munich again. It holds about three times as many museums, and many more bars and clubs, though only about half of them sit near the centre, so expect some travel between them.
Walking and quiet days: Strasbourg. Protected countryside covers a much larger share of the land around it, days run slightly warmer at up to 26°C, and most of its bars are near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget attached to each city is a national estimate of restaurant and hotel prices, not a measurement of Munich or Strasbourg. A large, heavily visited city can sit well above its own country's average, by more than the small gap between the two national figures, so neither number tells you which trip costs more.
Warm and dry are not the same month. Munich's best weather, in high summer, comes with its heaviest rain, near 120mm. Strasbourg's driest stretch, at 40mm or less, falls in winter, when highs sit at 5-12°C. The beaches counted near each are inland water, and neither city has a swimming season.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre). Strasbourg: 1991-2020 normals, Strasbourg (9.1 km from centre).
Munich is at its best in July and August, at 25°C, though those are also its wettest months, near 120mm. September eases to 20°C and less rain.
Strasbourg holds a longer good spell, 22-26°C from June to September, and stays drier than Munich through the same weeks, at 55-77mm against Munich's heavier summer rain. Its driest months, at 40mm or less, fall in winter, when it is too cold for much time outdoors.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-09 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
