The verdict
Choose Munich if you want park space near the centre, straightforward family days out and a compact core you can cover on foot.
Choose Paris if you want the denser trip: many times more notable places within walking distance of the centre, about three times as many restaurants and places to drink, and a longer stretch of mild, evenly watered months.

Where they differ
Munich keeps about twice as much park space near the centre, and its museums sit tightly around the core. Its kitchens cover a similar range to Paris's, so the difference in eating out is one of quantity rather than variety.
Paris carries many times as many notable places within walking distance of the centre, so days need less travelling. It has about three times as many restaurants and drinking places near the centre, roughly twice as many nightclubs, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach against Munich's 1.
Where they are alike
Day trips carry similar weight from either city. Protected land covers 28% near Paris and 17% near Munich, and each offers open country within reach rather than one defining excursion.
Neither is a swimming destination: no month brings sea at 21°C or more, and the few beaches near each are incidental. Both suit families, with a comparable number of attractions near the centre and a couple of theme parks within reach. The two national budget estimates sit close together.
Which traveller are you?
A short-break traveller who wants museums and monuments should take Paris: many times more notable places within walking distance of the centre, about three times as many museums, and 4 UNESCO-listed places within day-trip reach.
Families with small children will find Munich easier, with about twice as much park space near the centre and a similar spread of attractions, though Paris has 3 theme parks within reach against Munich's 2.
Anyone travelling for food and late nights should choose Paris, where restaurants, bars and clubs are all markedly more numerous, though in both cities about half of the drinking places sit near the centre.
What the numbers don't tell you
The daily budget figures, €163 and €160, are national estimates of restaurant and hotel price levels in Germany and France, not measurements of Munich or Paris. A capital or a heavily visited city can sit further from its national average than these two figures sit from each other, so neither tells you which trip costs more.
No weather station near Paris records sunshine hours, so that side of the weather comparison is unmeasured rather than low, and its monthly picture rests on temperature and rainfall alone. In Munich, the warmest months are also the wettest, so summer warmth and dry days do not arrive together.
When should you go?
The figures behind each month. Each row is shaded against that destination's own year, so the deepest cell is its best month for that measure and the palest its weakest. Shades are not comparable between the two rows.
Temperature and rainfall are thirty-year climate normals, averaged over the years shown. Paris: 1991-2020 normals, Paris-Montsouris (4.6 km from centre). Munich: 1991-2020 normals, München (1.9 km from centre).
Munich is at its best from June to August, when highs run 23-25°C, but that is also when rain peaks, at 107-121mm a month. September, at 20°C and 78mm, is the drier way to see it; January highs of 4°C make winter a hard sell.
Paris holds up longer. July and August reach 26°C with 54-58mm, while June and September sit at 24°C and 22°C with rain spread evenly through the year. February is the driest month at 38mm, and January highs of 8°C keep winter walkable.

The busiest departure cities for these two, with a place kept for each other part of the world. Busiest means arriving passengers where an official count exists, and where none does, the number of non-stop services flown: official route statistics are published by the European reporting countries and by nobody else, so a table ranked on them alone would offer a reader in New York or Tokyo ten European cities. Flying times are estimated from the distance between airports, and every row is a city flown non-stop to both. Where the typical offer connects anyway, the stops are shown. Under each figure is the airport the flight lands at and how far that is from the centre, because the nearest airport is not always the one a route is flown to. Where both columns name the same airport it is one flight, and the difference between the two is the distance printed beside it. Typical return fares for 2026-08 to 2026-10, cached market data up to 7 days old. The figure is the middle half of the offers found, so a single price means they agreed and a range means they did not; for a typical route that middle half spans about a quarter of the median, and for the least settled routes rather more than the median itself.
